You can see Steele asking if he was ok, read his lips. He got no response though, the reason being Talor was not fit to fight on. If you can't answer a question you certainly can't protect yourself.

    He jumped the gun.

I've seen it enough times to know he wanted to stop it before he stopped it.

Taylor earned the win and took that beating to get it. It was his and steele robbed him.

How fitting 'steele' was the ref.

:patsch Dude....you gotta be doing nothing more then playing Devil's advocate here. You can't be serious with that ****.

If Steele had pre-planned to stop it, WHY did he wait till the absolute last second? Did he just ..FORGET he was supposed to stop it eariler, and LUCKILY, Chavez was hitting him with a barrage that it gave him the excuse to stop it?

Look at taylor's face after he waves it off.

    Disgraceful.

    Taylor won.

Taylor was well ahead on my card too but as a referee you have a duty to protect a fighter from unnecessary punishment. That's what Steele did. The timing was unfortunate but the fact remains that he was not in a state to protect himself. That's all there is to it.

Yep, if the ref had stopped it in the first minute of the last round in the same manner nobody would have said a word, the fact that it was in the last 10 seconds of the round makes no difference. He asked Taylor if he was OK and he said nothing, he had to stop it.

If it's any consolation, Taylor won the event.

Several years back and this is before youtube had full fights on their site, someone in the Classic section asked to have the Chavez-Taylor fight uploaded to megaupload so that he could download it and watch it for the first time.......

......A poster obliged, but instead of uploading the HBO version, he uploaded a foreign Korean or Japanese version........a few days later the person who watched it for the first time without having a clue what the commentators were saying, posts......

........"I dont understand what all the controversy is about, Chavez was killing Taylor."

.....and I say to you all, anyone that has never watched the fight, and watches a foreign version where he cant understand the language, comes up thinking that Chavez clearly wins that fight even without the stoppage.

Even watching the highlights that Freddy posted, there is hardly a mention of the good work Chavez was doing on Taylor......the commentating crew would only open their mouth when Taylor was throwing shots, and they would credit him regardless if they were landing or not.

.....even when Chavez was landing heavy artillery, there was silence on the HBO broadcast.

When you have that type of bias from a broadcast team of all high praise to any little thing Taylor did, and silence when Chavez was doing his stuff, even a person who'd be rooting for Chavez would be influenced from hearing the bias broadcast team.

Someone earlier in the thread asked me who I thought was winning.
.....From what I remember, I either had it a draw or Chavez ahead by a point going into the final round.
In any regard, with the knockdown in the final round I would have had Chavez winning the fight by two or three points if it had gone to the cards.

Great highlights Freddy. Very rarely in a superfight do we see both the fighters fighiting every second of every round, giving every ounce of themselves and leaving everything they each have in the ring.:happy:bbb

Anybody with a brain knows Steele should have let Taylor continue. He deserves it and with 5 seconds left to go, Chavez wouldn't have time to ko Taylor for good. And damn Steele even look at the red light in which it means it was 5 seconds left to go. <<That itself destroyed Taylors career.

Great point. I used to be pissed at the result because I was just a Taylor fan (currently I'm a fan of both Chavez & Taylor) but with more time to think about it, Steele did the right thing. Any person saying Taylor should've continued are sick-minded individuals and just sadistic. I'd hate for people like that to be my ref lol. All jokes aside Taylor was in no shape to go on just look into his eyes after the kd.
