One of the best fights of the 1990s. I don't have a definitive choice for the best fight of the decade. This and Carbajal-Gonzalez 1 are up there. Robinson-Gatti 1 was amazing too.

The rematch was actually a pretty decent fight as well. Taylor surpassed expectations by being competitive in the early going and doing some solid work. However, it was pretty clear he had a tough time taking Chavez's shots, how he'd sort of pause in reaction to taking a punch, and after that really exciting 6th round, it was just a matter of time.

Look at the stoppage again.....as Steele just waives it off, Taylor has this look and say's, "what".....but as Taylor's corner jump the ring and are by Taylor's side, Steele turns away to leave Taylor and Taylor is stuck holding the ring ropes to hold himself up.....

A fighter who was willing and fit to continue would have immediately followed right behind Steele in protest, but Taylor was stuck in that same corner he got knocked down in for a while because he legs could'nt carry him.

Freddy put up a youtube link of Mosley knocking out Mayorga with the same ammount of time left on the clock as was left in that Chavez-Taylor fight.

When Mosley connected with the final KO blow, there was still time to spare as you could hear the bell ring 2 or 3 seconds after Mosley's final connect.

Mayorga had actually responded to the referee and was fit to continue......I'd hate to have seen what would have happened to Taylor had Chavez raced across the ring and landed that final blow without Taylor having a clue where it was coming from.:-(

notice how that video is getting ignored and people are still arguing a few pages later....proof that too many idiots think they know what they're talking about....here we have proof in HD, with the exact same timing of the knockdown yet they still wanna argue :rofl:rofl:rofl

I asked specifically....and it appears you are skirting...

Again, if you think they had it in for taylor, why did the ref wait till the LAST second to stop the fight, which also happened COINCIDETNALLY when Taylor was taking a barrage of hard hits? Did Steele forget earlier in the fight or something? Try to give me a straigh answer please. Thanks! :thumbsup

The highlights don't really show how bad Taylor was getting beat up at the end. I think a lot of people are judging this fight in hindsight, that because there were only a few seconds left in the fight the ref should had let it continue and it doesn't matter if Chavez jumped right back on Taylor because even if Chavez started pounding on Taylor again the clock would have run out of time, the ko would not have happened, and Taylor would have won. Sounds like that sums it up.

But boxing doesn't work like that. The ref's job is primarily the health of the fighters. In the heat of the moment, Taylor looked done.

Dude...there's no "EVERYONE" who thought that. SO there's no hypocsiry there. You can't assign hypocrisy to some randon group. Not to mention, a **** LOAD of people had a problem with the stoppage, so what you talking about?

The ref did his job in this fight. Does it suck for Taylor? Absolutely. But still, the ref just did his job.

Lol I would too. Personally, I prefer the Rafa-Izzy trilogy but it's close as imo all 6 fights were great. Ironic that I would prefer the Rafa-Izzy trilogy because even though I'm a fan of Rafael, I'm a fan of Morales & Barrera more.

That's the first time in a while I've watched the last round. There is onyl seconds left in the fight, not the round, the fight, then its over!

I could be wrong, but Richard Steele may the wrong call. But he's only human & he did not hesitate to make the call he felt was appropriate. Better than having a hesitant referee!

My heart goes out to Meldrick Taylor! Its like he touched his Dream, then it was ripped from him, not by Chavez, but by Richard Steele!

Wrong call, but that's just my view!

If there is anyone who can be swayed by what a broadcast team is saying during a fight...THEN THEY SHOULD'NT BE WATCHING BOXING IN THE FIRST PLACE.

Gotta give Taylor Mad respect for showing the heart he did. In the last two rounds he basicly was fighting on instinct. Did you guys catch when he missed and uppercut and hit himself in the face? think was towards the end of the 11th round. That's how out of it he was, he was just fighting on instinct at that point.

Chavez corner was going nuts, in a panic. But Chavez just remained calm and focused. Taylor never put his back against the ropes, as he was trained to avoid that. and the only time he deviated and got against the ropes is when the Knockdown came.

A great fight to analize, so much going on, from bost fighters.
