Forget Tyson vs the Klitschko brothers - How would Tyson's leftovers from the 80s do?

We all know that Tyson would knock Wladimir out in about a minute. If the golfer Corrie Sanders starched Wlad in 2 rounds then a prime Tyson would devour Klitschko. And we all know that if the feather-fisted light heavyweight Byrd made Vitali quit, then chances aren't that good against Iron Mike. But what about Tyson's opponents from the 1980s? Men like Trevor Berbick, Pinklon Thomas, Larry Holmes, Tony Tucker, Tony Tubbs, and Michael Spinks -- who were all capable heavyweights and would no doubt be top heavyweight contenders in this pathetic era of big men.

    Here's my take:

Trevor Berbick vs. the Klitschkos - Berbick was very solid, but I do think that the size of the Klitschkos as well as the performance enhancers that they most likely take (Vitali tested positive) would be the difference.

Pinklon Thomas/Larry Holmes vs. the Klitschkos - Both Thomas and Holmes had jabs that would've gave both Klitschkos fits. Plus, Thomas and Holmes were excellent boxers who would've made the Klitschkos look silly.

Tony Tucker vs. the Klitschkos - Now here was a man who was just as big as either Klitschko, but who could actually take a punch. Not to mention that Tucker had the heart that the Klitschkos wished they could have. A chin, heart, and some excellent boxing skills would prove to be the Klitschkos' demise.

Tony Tubbs vs. the Klitschkos - Tubbs was an incredibly underrated boxer who had very quick hands for a man his size. He gave a prime Riddick Bowe all that Bowe could handle and I think it's safe to say that the Klitschko couldn't carry Bowe's jockstrap. It would be close, but I think Tubbs prevails against the brothers.

Michael Spinks vs. the Klitschkos - The Klitschko brothers would be completely befuddled by the awkward style of Spinks. And with the case of Wladimir, who is extremely susceptible to the right hand, the Spinks Jinx would land at will. Vitali would be tougher to defeat, but I think the longer Spinks lasts, the better shot he has of defeating Vitali. Who knows, if the going got tough for Vitali, he might even quit on his stool like his infamous fight with Chris Byrd.

I disagree - all wins on the Klitschko side except for a (maybe!) exception with Tyson knocking out Wlad. (at least the Wlad from a couple of years ago - now he might be able to force even Tyson into clinching).

Either way - your avatar makes the credibiltiy of your post close to zero. Too sad for all the work you put into it - with the fancy colours and all.

Vitali and Vlad are the wrong style for Tyson. Styles make fights. Vitali or Vlad would have knocked out all of Tyson's victims.

cOULD this post be any more biased? geez... anyways; i think the only guy who could beat either Klitschko here is Tony Tubbs. Tubbs was durable & smart. He probably had the size & speed to UD either Klitschko brother. But Holmes (too old), Spinks (too small) & Thomas (too drugged up) would have no chance. & Forget Biggs, Berbick & Bonecrusher... they would all be smashed by the Klitschko's.
I don't agree with your comment about Tony Tucker. I think that in his prime (1986-1987) he was about 25-30lbs lighter than either klitschko. He would probably be out hugged or out muscled by both brothers.

I'd respond, but I am sure you'll have another thread or should i say a similar thread on the cornucopia of reasons why you think Klitschko's suck. I'd say give it a day or two but no less than a week. But what I can truely comment on is the fine, fine, choice of color. I do like the turquoise, it gives an extra dimension to your diatribes.:D

Both Klitschko brothers defeat all of Mikes victims from the 80's except a prime Larry Holmes, and maybe a prime Michael Spinks. They also have a decent shot at out pointing Tyson, especially Vitaly, maybe.

i take immediate issue with the statement that byrd MADE vitali quit. i wonder if this thread poster has watched the fight broadcast--or even read the annotated fight result in its entirety. vitali quit, no doubt about that--and i questioned his heart and resolve until the lewis fight for it--but he was beating byrd easily, having never once looked bothered by byrd's punches and suffered a shoulder injury that was wholly unrelated to any physical contact between the two fighters. vitali's injury to his brittle body was the result of an errant motion of his own execution.

Likewise, I find it impressive that you organized your biased, completely non objective, lacking all forms of credit thoughts so cohesively. As well organized a post as I have ever seen.

In turn, I am also impressed at how you are not swayed by form of argument whatsoever. No amount of reasoning, rationale, or insult deters you from your thoughts. At the same time, you will claim to be a completely objective boxing fan, and accuse us all of being uniformed idiots that are blind to the truth, the truth being what you believe of course, since you are right and we are all wrong.

    Touche sir, touche

I'm sorry, but I cannot share your opinion at all. Against a prime Vitali all the mentioned fighters would've lost and I believe Tyson would've lost against him also. Against Wlad, Tyson would've had his puncher's chance...I doubt that one of the other guys would've had a chance against him if he would've been in their era of boxing.

On his worst night, Wlad can lose even to average fighters. On his best night, he is a challenge for anyone in history. If you use the pre - prime Wlad example of the Sanders fight and the best version of Tyson, you are just trying to construct an argument against Wlad. How about the best version of Wlad against the Tyson who lost to McBride?

Vitali decided to protect his career, Byrd had nothing to do with him quitting. Just in the last round before Vitali quit, he landed twice as many punches than Byrd. Vitali is one of the mentally strongest fighters in boxing, he would not be intimidated by Tyson at all. Vitali eats undersized fighters like Tyson for lunch.
