Everytime Threads are made about Classic "Multiple" Fights (Rematches)...It's always Gatti vs Ward (which I truly understand...GREAT TRILOGY), Pryor vs Arguello, Bowe vs Holyfield, Pacquiao vs The 3 ATG Mexicans, Marquez vs Barerra and Of course Ali vs Frazier...and more. But the two Robinson vs Gatti fights in 1998...WERE GREAT FIGHTS!!! In fact, if I remember correctly, their first fight was the 1998 Ring Magazine Fight and Upset of the Year.

Robinson-Gatti 1 is about as great as Gatti-Ward 1. No rounds in Robinson-Gatti were quite as great as round 9 in Gatti-Ward 1, but the action level was more consistent throughout the fight.

    Gatti-Robinson 1 = Gatti-Ward 1 > Gatti-Robinson 2 > Gatti-Ward 3 > Gatti-Ward 2

Ward himself tends to get some of his exciting fights overlooked. Everyone remembers the Gatti fights and Augustus, but he also had an excellent brawl against Neary, and terrific fights with Green and Diaz.

Gatti-Ward as a trilogy tends to get overrated to be honest. Both of these guys had numerous fights better than their last two bouts against each other.

I always thought Robinson was a talented ass fighter. I do remember a very interesting article in Ring Magazine around 2001 (think), in an series of interviews with some of the best trainers in the sport...both Lou Duva and Tommy Brooks accused Robinson of being Lazy. I remember thinking at the time..."THAT'S ****ED UP".

  5. I dont know if he was lazy but he did lack power, 30 or so odd wins and only about 10 knockouts? But his fights against Gatti were incredible though.

Not really forgotten, I've seen them compared favourably to the Ward trilogy a number of times.

Mad props to the Third Man in the ring for both fights. Both fighters were hurt, both fighters were taking BIG-SHOTS and both fighters were completely out on their feet at times. A lesser of a Ref could've ruin Both Fights with Early Stoppages. But they allowed TWO WARRIORS to give us a TIMELESS CLASSIC!!!
