Every now and then I like to go back and revisit some fighters and fights we don’t discuss a lot. This one jumps out at me from the FOTW series. Marcos Villasana makes his 5th attempt to win a piece of the Featherweight title after 4 failed attempts against Azumah Nelson (x’s 2) Antonio Esparragoza and Jeff Fenech.

After losing to Fenech, Jeff vacated the title setting up a showdown for the vacant title between Villasana and the unbeaten Hodkinson. Hodkinson seemed to be getting the best of the action when both of his eyes began to swell and Villasana would score an unlikely stoppage to finally win a title. Villasana would make 3 successful defenses of the WBC title when they would meet again with Hodkinson bringing part of the title back home to England.

Not sure if anyone has seen these before but they are worth the time if you have not check them out.

I taped the first one from the original broadcast but have never seen the second fight.

@PhillyPhan69 , I watched their first bout a couple of months back. This is what I wrote:

Watched the first fight between Marcos Villasana and Paul Hodkinson just now. Two tough little battlers. Hard luck for Paul. He did such great work throughout but Villasana was like a machine. No use hitting him and he's always in your face. He sort of reminds me of Chango Carmona, both physically and stylistically. Both slow starters, both sharp rather than hard hitters and both were content to whittle the opponent down with a subtle but often used left hook to the liver. No need to run a card here, I had Hoko up 70-64 after 7 completed rounds (actual scores - 69-63, 69-67 and 70-64 all for Hoko) giving Villasana only a share of the 3rd round. But it should be noted that the damage he was inflicting was subtle but pronounced as one could see by Hoko's features at the end. Also, lest I forget to mention, Villasana lost a point in the 8th for a low blow and then dropped a weary Hoko along the ropes before the fight was called. Despite my apparent one-sided score, it was a damn good fight.

Philly, went to watch the rematch after this fight and aborted it when I heard the announcer say 'Round 5' after two rounds. Man, I hate watching a fight with rounds missing. Would love to see the rematch in its entirety, though.
