ok always wonder what peopls thought on this fight would be never heard any one mention it before> so prime for prime who takes this fight i go With foreman in 8. i think it would be quite a good fight
George 6'3" 215 lbs...Louis 6'2" 205 lbs....reach similar. Louis fought and beat men as big, or bigger than George. Louis has better boxing skills, slight edge in power to Foreman. To me it is who backs who up. I go with George down early, then gets up to land a crushing left hook/ right uppercut as Louis moves in. Foreman in 2 (not a blowout..just that Foreman can withstand Joe's initial attack, and Joe can not take George's "anywhere punch")
I dont know, Jimmy young did well against Foreman. I see Louis catching Foreman coming in alot, especially when Foreman starts throwing his looping rights and lazy uppercuts. At that time Georges chin and stamina were big factors in his fights, I see Louis pulling an Ali and just letting George throw wild punches for the first 6 or 7 rounds and when he sees him tired and his hands down, thats when he will attack. I see Louis winning by KO in the 7th or 8th round.
Joe was obviously the superior boxer. And he did do well against larger opponents like Galento and both Baers. However, young Foreman was a force of nature. I see Louis outboxing George for a few rounds, but finding himself backing down and getting clubbed to the canvas several times in the mid rounds. George by 7th rd TKO.
"Joe getting clubbed to the canvas several times in the mid rounds." I like it....that decribes George's punching style and the reason Ali called him "The Mummy".
Louis would tear foreman apart. If hurt, he had better chance than foreman of coming back in fight, stamina was way better, hands were way faster, he hit as hard (debateable) he hit harder in combo's (not really debateable) Fought better on inside, and was more all around skilled.
He was small compared to Foreman though. As much as I love the old timers the fact that they all were around 200 lbs fighting guys in the 220s - 230s has to play a factor.
I used to lean towards Foreman. Now I laugh at myself, and realise that Louis is perhaps the worst possible style matchup for Foreman, along with Liston.
Louis could be knocked down by cruiserweights like Braddock and Schmeling. He was great in his own area, but imagine the following: 1. If Foreman would have fought in the 1930's with most HW's being 185 - 200 pounds. 2. If during Foreman's era there would have been no Ali. In either case, Foreman would probably have been the greatets HW of all time, undefeated and with a KO percentage of 90 - 100%. Ali really derailed Foreman's career and undermined his mental toughness. Joe Louis obviously couldn't fight Foreman the way Ali did, he would ahve to take the fight to Foreman and that is a very dangerous proposition.
