I'd never heard of him before, but I read in the London Evening Standard that former heavyweight boxer James Oyebola was shot four times at a London nightclub by Yardies. He was working as a bouncer at a club next door, and had come over to the club to have a drink with the owner. He went to back up that clubs' bouncers who were asking four men to put out their cigarettes, explaining that smoking was now illegal inside the club (we had new legislation outlawing smoking in indoors public places from July 1st). By all accounts he was polite and non-threatening, although a 6'9" former heavyweight boxer is probably just a tad threatening however soft-spoken he is!
Anyway, the men took offence, and later one pulled a gun and shot him four times at point-blank range in the face and the leg. He is now in hospital in London under Police guard, and with his wife and children at his bedside.

James Oyebola was born in Lagos, Nigeria, and boxed professionally from 1987 to 1996 in his new home of England, compiling a decent 18-4-1 (16KOs) record, and winning the British Southern Area Title and the WBC Intercontinental Title against Roge McKenzie in 1993. He later won the British title in 1994 against previously unbeaten Clifton Mitchell, before losing it after one defence to Scott Welch in 1995. He retired after Julius Francis knocked him out in the 5th round in September 1996, for that old Southern Area Title. He was 6'9" with an 85" reach.

God bless him and his family.

have not heard of him sincve he retired.
i followed his amatuer career quite a lot at the time

the scott welsh fights were very entertaining.

big right hand and truely enormous size and physical specimen.

he gave it a go v lennox lewis when they met in a commonwealth fight.

this "respect " culture in the anglo west indian community is only going to get worse and is spreading to others.
