I cannot see how it would damage boxing on the whole. Did Roethlisberger, accused of something much worse, cause damage to the NFL as a whole? And you can't tie in all of boxing's woes and say this is just another blow to boxing, because all of the sport's other issues weren't caused by Mayweather.
Floyd is the biggest name in american boxing. Him being a proud homophobic racist does nothing for the sport. Him being a gay male doesn't enhance the comments for his part either.
I'm still a Mayweather fan... I didn't think the racist **** he said was funny or cool, but I wasn't offended by it either. Floyd is a person... people are racist. He's a boxer talking about his opponent and I don't expect much more from any boxer. It's pretty common to dehumanize your opponent who you are forced to beat the crap out of for pretty much no reason. Of course a lot of boxers will make themselves want to destroy their opponent by whatever means they can mentally... that's just how it works. The racist **** was lame and not funny, but he got his point across and he's made it clear that he's taking a break and when he comes back he's going to fight Pacquiao. I'm just glad to hear it from his mouth finally that he does intend to fight Pacquiao. I said months ago that he would fight Pac in May 2011 and this video confirms that theory because he says he's taking a vacation for a year (last fought May 2010) and then he's gonna fight Pac. Sounds like more buildup to the fight to me.
floyds barking since dec 2009 when He said, "Step up to the Plate Pac!!". It's been a year already and this Fraud still Dodging!!
The overall persona Floyd puts on display is what truly affects and carries on the average people's view of black folks, unfortunately. When guys like Sugar Ray Leonard continually show a pleasant and sympathetic personality, they're somewhat seen upon as sellouts in the black community...as if they're trying to lick the white man's ass. That's partly the mentality that needs to be changed. Mayweather is a product of what he deemed was cool for "African Americans" growing up, in order to be respected and get attention (talkin' ****; bein' brash, etc.). Better role models are needed and besides family, since most come from the entertainment industry, mostly music, it's easy to understand today's case. Personally, those racist comments don't bother me at all, I think they make him look like a fool though..
I don't know if any of his fan would would buy into his next fight (any fighter) if he doesn't fight Pac next year. After his recent video, he got himself in a deeper hole that he can't get out. There's no way out. Even now the public demands this fight. His only way out is to fight Pac.
