    The life, career, and death of Denny Moyer certainly gives us something to think about whenever we start complaining about fighters not fighting often enough, or not making every fight a monster affair.

    During a period of 18 years this champion fought 1292 rounds over the course of 140 fights. From 1960 thru 1962 Denny fought 5 fights against all time great boxers, and 7 other fights against contenders. He finished his career in 1975 with a record of 97-38-4. His resume' reads like a who's who of 1950's, 1960's, and 1970's welterweights, light-middleweights, and middleweights. He entered a nursing him in 2004, and died there in 2010 at age 71.

    I am a nurse, and I have spent the last 10 years working in several nursing homes. Trust me, it ain't no place for a champion to die. We, as boxing fans, need to find some way to make sure these warriors who give us so much get to leave us with their dignity intact.

    I've never heard anyone have anything but glowing things to say about Moyer...and he's also quoted as saying that the 17 years he spent boxing were the best 17 of his life.

    As for what to take out of that, I don't really know. I guess it just shows the complexity of the issue, because some guys really do just love the sport that much even though it's taking years off their life. All I know is I hate seeing good, hardworking fighters who put their health on the line for the entertainment of schlubs like us have to go through their last years like that.

    Back in the day, the Pacific Northwest was a hotbed of professional wrestling. It was one of the hottest of the old NWA territories. Dutch Savage, Tough Tony Borne, Lonnie "Moondog" Mayne, and others were household names. Denny Moorer was the only boxer who ever enjoyed that level of celebrity.
