Why are some boxers qualified as "former x divisions world champion" ( example: Broner, former 3 division world champion ) while others are qualified as "x divisions world champion" ( example: Pacquiao, 8 divisions world champion or Mayweather, 5 divisions world champion ) ?

    I'd like to understand please.

I don't understand the question. There's 17 weight classes in boxing, Strawweight being the lowest and Heavyweight being the highest.

Broner held a belt at Super Featherweight(130) Lightweight(135) and at Welterweight(147) meaning he's a 3 division world champ across 4 weight classes.

I'm guessing it has to do with the fact of whether one still holds a title or not. If has a title he's still considered champion if not but used then he's a former. I see what you are saying but it would be odd to announce someone as a champion with no current title.

Its because they've held titles in all of those divisions, they had to drop the titles when they moved up in weight.

Manny has been the Flyweight, Super Bantamweight, Featherweight, Super Featherweight, Lightweight, Light Welterweight, Welterweight and Light Middleweight Champion. So he's a former 8 division Champion Got it.

Manny is currently a WW Champion that he won back from Tim Bradley.

And sometimes they go between division and fight like Floyd he defends at WW and LMW, although he recently dropped the LMW title.

I used to be from the 80's to the early 00's, not much anymore, they were around at the beginning of TNA. Jerry Lynn was in ECW as well.

I meant when the announcer call the fighter to the ring, or when an article is written, sometimes they refer to a fighter as former ( broner, paulie, khan just to name a few ), while some not ( manny, floyd, ODLH ... )

former means they are former champs.

if they aren't a champ now they cant be classed as current. Moneyman is current, so he doesn't get called former, whilst his mini-me Broner is no longer owner of a title, so he must be called former.

    or did I miss something?
