Last night I watched Forrest V Mayorga 1 for the first time since 2003. In this bout Shildse told Forrest not to back up, and to stay in the center of the ring, it sounds as if he was telling Forrest to go toe to toe with Mayorga, when I think he should've stayed on the outside, worked the jab and stayed on his bicycle. I have ambivalent feelings towards Shields as a trainer. I don't think he gives Juan Diaz good advice, and he seems to be a sourpuss/malcontent type of trainer. Thoughts?

I've never been impressed with Shields as a trainer. He ALWAYS has to shout at his guys to throw more punches (Juarez, Guinn, Cintron) and I just don't think that's a coincidence. I can't remember the guy ever leading his fight to an upset or even a significant victory where his fighter is obviously supperior. Much worse than Buddy McGirt in that regard. As you say his corner demeanor is very negative which seems to get to guys.
