Many people dont realize foster did his best work pre title. the early 1960s lightheavyweight era was one of the more underated eras throughout history. Foster fought the top guys Mauro Mina, Eddie Cotton, Allen Thomas, Henry Hank, and capped it off with Dick Tiger. Too bad Foster never fought Harold Johnson or Jose Torres.
Tiger was a bit of a late bloomer. Tiger was past his prime but still a great older fighter at 37. you have to remember foster fought tiger directly after he destroyed very good Jose Torres twice, and even after the foster loss tiger would beat nino benvenuti.
Johnson was rated no10 in 68 the year Foster won the title. In 69 Instead of defending against the likes of Depaula ,unranked and Kendall ,no 9 Foster could have met Peralta no2. Dunlop no5. Preberg no4 Rosette no8. Bossman Jones no9.even Bogs was no 6. Foster was a great lh in the top 4 imo,but he fought pretty poor challengers imo,Rouse was unranked both times as was Hicks and Kelly add Depaula ,thats 4 title shots that could have gone to Dupree,Jones Dunlop,Preberg ,Bogs ,Rosette or the aging Johnson .Tiger didnt destroy Torres the fights were reasonably close .Given that Gregorio Peralta went up to heavy and fared pretty well against Foreman ,he might have given Foster an interesting evening dont you think?
Well, Lopez's previous fight was his inspired title challenge against Saad, so, while he was past his peak, he was certainly viable. And, while Johnson was probably past his absolute peak, he would go on to claim a portion of the LH title after Spinks vacated. Sutherland, Elson, and Ronquello were decent scalps, too, pre-championship Plus, the division that Spinks reigned over was, in general, far superior to that of Foster's.
Probably Spinks for resume. And he was the more complete fighter as well. Foster's long range boxing gives him the edge in terms of outright boxing ability. Spinks put them together with more authority in bunches. Handspeed would go to Spinks as well, but only just.
Yeah, Foster's jab was like a rocket. Thats why I said he was probably the better "out and out" boxer. But Spinks' combinations were better I reckon.
Eddie Mustapha Muhammad, Marvin Johnson, Dwight Muhammad Qawi, Yaqui Lopez, Murray Sutherland at least equal the group mentioned, as far as Light Heavyweight accomplishments are concerned.
Add a Davis or two above Sutherland too. Spinks beat the better fighters, Qawi and EMM are top flight.
Spinks has the better one over Foster.Tom Bethea, Johnny Summerhays, Marvin Johnson, Ramon Ronquiello, Yaqui Lopez, Eddie Mustafa Muhammad, among others.Take away the time he was out for Leon and his knee injury, he would've fought everybody.
