FOTC Frazier v Tokyo Douglas?

I was just thinking this Perry.

Except given Foreman's power & the distance & angle he threw it at, it worked very well for him.

 

Ali threw his left hook come uppercut plenty of times against Frazier...

 

Tyson was awful against Douglas - no head movement and no combinations. He was beaten to the punch and seemed almost out of ideas after 3 rounds - lunging in with single shots. Also Douglas is much fitter than Tyson in this fight - the bounce in Douglas legs is still there in round 10 - Tyson looks tired early on.

Frazier would have a problem with Douglas reach early on but he would have the stamina to keep up a high work rate and somewhere between rounds 5-9 he will get to Douglas with a well timed left hook. Frazier just never tired against Ali.

 

Not really. He relied on his straight right and jab far, far more.

 

Well of course they were his bread and butter shots but he threw that shot pretty often.

The enlarged part is the most pertinent. Anyone believing otherwise is merely pushing there own agenda. Or are you claiming Frazier suddenly lost this " ferocity " and " will to win " in the 2 defeats that followed to Ali, or in the blow outs by Foreman?

You see it doesn't matter which way you cut it Ali was always 2 years older than Frazier, and he did have a 3 year enforced lay off. It makes me laugh when people come up with the old " Frazier's style wasn't conducive to longevity " chestnut. So which is it, was he this elusive genius who bobbed and weaved his way in avoiding shots to get close? Or, as is more likely a face first slugger?

He simply can't have been both.

Frazier defensively was probably no better or worse than most come-forward sluggers.
In that department I feel only Tyson has really seperated himself from the pack.

It stands to reason that any fighter who presses the fight constantly is going to get hit more than the fellow going side-to-side and backward.
I think Joe had reasonable defensive skills.
Against lesser talents his bob and weave worked very well but of course against a durable, fast-handed sharpshooter like Ali he was inevitably going to take a lot of punches.
Unfortunately Joe dipped straight down when bobbing and that's one of the reasons the uppercut proved so effective against him.

 

Tyson did the same thing, and also held his gloves in "peek a boo" fashion, making him a sucker for the uppercut.
Every style has it's holes, especially fighters who fight aggressive to win.
