    Round 1: Even
    Round 2: Briscoe
    Round 3: Vito
    Round 4: Briscoe
    Round 5: Vito
    Round 6: Briscoe
    Round 7: Vito
    Round 8: Briscoe
    Round 9: Vito
    Round 10: Vito

    5-4-1 Vito Antuofermo

Wow, as you can see by my score I had it back and forth and a lot closer than the official scores and yours. So I am in the minority here. On mine everything hinged on the final round, which Vito pulled out on the tiring Briscoe. Right at the end I could hear the ringside announcer state that he had Briscoe 'just' taking it. I think his score and my score properly reflected how close we felt it was as opposed to the official scores, which I believe to be 7-3, 7-2-1 and 6-3-1 all for Vito. I like Vito but I thought this was close.

I went back and grabbed a bunch of clips from the first several rounds of the fight where I felt Vito intentionally (or at least recklessly) led with his head. Some of the examples are more blatant and egregious than others but I think they all show a pattern and unfairly bolsters his effectiveness. It's that much harder to counter him effectively or to deal with his hooks and body punches if you have to worry about him his forehead lead down the middle smacking you in your chin or mouth. He seems to even have a favorite combination where he leads with his head down the middle while throwing arm punch hooks downstairs to the ribs and stomach.

I went overboard but here are some clips from the first six rounds or so:

Good stuff and appreciate the efforts. A couple seem quite minor. Most seem haphazard or careless/reckless a couple looked bad...

But this begs a question...how much of this do you attribute to Antuofermo being a tough/dirty charge in brawler as I have not yet watched the Corro fight, and off the top of my head have seen 6 or so Antuofermo fights (Hagler I & II, Minter I & 2, Briscoe & Hart) and have yet to watch the Corro fight....and how much might be the natural difficulty of southpaw vs Orthodox that can lead to these clashes in many fights. We see him use/do this against Minter & Hagler (and he himself gets cut on a butt in Hagler 2), but I don’t see the same thing in the Briscoe fight...and I have not watched Corro or rewatched Hart as of yet.

So do you think it was more of Antuofermo and his intentional or reckless style, or the contrast in fighting stance...or both lol

Either way good work digging for those clips

scored Antuofermo - Hagler II, the video was titled "Marvin Hagler slaughters Vito Antuofermo." It was a good two way fight, the accidental head clash in the first threw VA's game off because of the blood. There was the off balance knockdown in the third but other than that the fight was similar to the first fight, good two way fighting. I had MH leading by 40-37 at the time of the stoppage, giving him rounds 2,3 and scoring 1 and 4 EVEN. Without the accidental clash in the first it would have probably been a long close fight like the first one.

I think this goes well beyond the typical southpaw-orthodox scenario imo. Vito repeatedly crouches or cocks his neck at unnatural angles and leads with the crown of his head aimed directly at his opponent's mouth and jaw area. In some instances he even takes multiple steps forward while doing so. He often does it while throwing very weak body blows, almost as if he's trying to distract Hagler into lowering his guard so that his head can connect and do damage. I might be wrong but it just looks dirty to me--either intentional or so willfully reckless that it might as well be intentional.

I'm definitely the outlier here but I didn't think this fight was close at all. Some swings in momentum and competitive rounds but I had Hagler way ahead.

After having Hagler up 4--1-1 through 6, I ended up scoring it (using Philly's card as my template):
    7 Hagler (Hagler 69-65)
    8 Antuofermo (Hagler 78-75)
    9 Even (Hagler 88-85)
    10 Hagler (Hagler 98-94) clear
11 Hagler (Hagler 108-103) (closer. And I agree with Philly that it was a fun round)
    12 Even (Hagler 118-113)
    13 Antuofermo (Hagler 127-123)
14 Hagler (Hagler 137-132) clear, due to the first 1:45 or so of the round
15 Hagler (Hagler 147-141) closer but still clear

Hagler 9-3-3. I think the main difference lies in how we scored rounds 8-12. I thought that Hagler landed the cleaner, harder punches in some of those rounds.

BTW, the second half of Hagler-Antuefermo was an example of some of my issues with Howard Cosell's commentary. In my opinion, he fell in love with the narrative that Vito was making a run and so he started completely ignoring a lot of the clean punches that Hagler was landing in some of those rounds (10 and 11 especially) from in close. There were a few sequences where Hagler tagged Vito with decent punches but Cosell only chose to focus on one of Vito's punches or even just on the fact that Vito was forcing the pace of the fight.

    Antuofermo Outpoints Corro
    By MICHAEL KATZJULY 1, 1979

MONTE CARLO, Monaco, June 30 Vito Antuofermo, an Italian who first learned to box in Flatbush, upset Hugo Corro tonight to win the world middleweight championship, boxing's only undivided title.

Antuofermo, swarming around a tiring Corro, rallied in the last five rounds to gain a split decision in an ugly brawl in which there were no knockdowns but plenty of butts, low blows and missed punches.

Ernesto Magana of Mexico, the referee appointed by the World Boxing Association, scored the fight for the 26-year-old Antuofermo, 146 points to 145, in a 10‐point scoring system used for the 15‐round match. The two British judges appointed by the World Boxing ‘Council differed on their verdicts. Roland Dakin had it 143‐142 for the Italian, while the other judge, Wally Thon, had it 146‐145 for the Argentine.

The New York Times had Antuofermo ahead, 143‐142.

    Aiming at Hagler

Antuofermo was penalized a point in the sixth round by the referee for leading with his, head, a tactic both fighters used much of the fight. And it appeared that both contestants were taking aim at the man who stole the show tonight, Marvin Hagler.

Hagler, the top‐ranked middleweight contender who had been promised the next title shot against tonight's winner, ‘stopped Norberto Cabrera of Argentina at 1 minute 15 seconds of the eighth :round of a scheduled 10‐round preliminary.

“That didn't look like no championship fight to me,” said Hagler.

Antuofermo, who went to the United States with his family in search of work ‘when he was 15, said, “I'll be ready for Marvin soon, but first let me take a little rest.”

    “I'll retire him,” said Hagler.

Corro, who won the title in April, 1978, by upsetting Rodrigo Valdez, had been injured twice in training and had not fought since last November. At the end, he was a very tired fighter.

“He was tired in the last three rounds, yes,” said Tito Lectoure, his manager. “But he don't lose the fight.”

The fight was rough, but it was close. Corro, a magnificent defensive boxer who was hard to hit, managed to get awa'y from most of Antuofermo's headdown rushes early in the fight, but Corro, who appeared to have left his left jab home, did little counter-punching of his own.

He did manage to make the punchprone Antuofermo bleed from the minor cuts in the corner of the Italian's right eye in the second round and reopened them again in the sixth. But neither cut was much of a problem for Antuofermo's 72-year-old cornerman, Freddy Brown.

Brown perhaps saved a riot from taking place in the crowd of 2,000 in an outdoor arena in a parking lot near the Royal Palace here. The ring announcer was about to announce that Corro had won the decision when Brown asked him to check the scorecards again.

With Corro holding a commanding lead, Antuofermo was able to change the pace in the later rounds. He began to get the tiring Corro against the ropes. He hit any part of the champion's body he could reach — behind the head, below the belt, in the back.

“My only problem was his head, not his fists,” said Corro.

“I didn't do it on purpose,” replied Antuofermo. “It's the way I fight.”

Antuofermo realized the futility of trying to outbox Corro in the middle of the ring.

“He's a terrific boxer,” said Antuofermo. “He outboxed Ronnie Harris, which is the master of boxing. The next time, I'll knock him out. The next time, I'll get him on the ropes earlier. That's where I seen he could be had.”

Antuofermo, weighed in at 1591Apounds, was in control for the last five rounds, although a couple of overhand rights by Corro, 158%, shook him early in the 19th round.

Antuofermo has now won 44 fights against three losses and a draw. He said he might take some time off to have plastic surgery done to prevent him from bleeding around the eyebrows. Corro, who suffered only his third loss against 47 victories and a draw, will presumably be back in the title picture soon. But first he must wait until Hagler gets his long‐awaited shot.

Bob Arum, the promoter, said it was possible the Antuofermo‐Hagler match might be held Sept. 22 at Schaefer Stadium in Foxboro, Mass.

Hagler, 1601,4 pounds, was not even as sharp as he can be. The 27-year-old Brockton, Mass., southpaw was unable to find a sparring partner for the week in Europe he spent preparing for this fight against Cabrera, who is one of only two men to have beaten Corro previously.
