OK, just switched over from the Segura-Calderon PPV.

There is an eight rounder in progress, almost at the halfway point.

Mauricio Martinez vs. Jhonatan Arenas

 

This looks like a good action fight. Next should be (?) the main event.

 

In the fifth, Arenas is just getting his punches through a bit better. Wide looping bombs to the pecs and face (really, Martinez's trunks are WAY too high so the pecs are the only available body target). Martinez is trying to counter him with short punches and/or clinch up but Arenas is looking very strong and having his way.

 

Arenas is just absolutely intent on getting the KO. He has Martinez's face busted open but just can't put the guy down and out. He's completely abandoned defense in his reckless pursuit of the lullaby.

Round 7

Arenas clambers on, throwing punishing lefts to the body and thudding overhand rights all with bad intentions. Martinez takes it all like a man, trying to roll his head a bit and block some but largely getting bombed out. Good chin on this guy. Martinez just can't get a word in edgewise, trying to counter punch but Arenas' fists are just a blur (not that he has terribly great handspeed, he just never stops punching, one hand behind the other). These are hard punches from Arenas, too. Since I've been watching (partway through 4th round) it's been all hard power punches. Martinez leans against him and works his hands on the inside, lands a couple of nice uppercuts but not nearly enough to steal the round where he took another huge beating.

That's four rounds in a row for Arenas that I've seen (three and three quarters, anyway). Even if Martinez swept the first three (doubtful) he's looking at maybe eking out a draw at best here.

 

Round 8

Martinez is rolling his shoulders, still looking fresh despite having taking such a licking over the last twenty minutes. Martinez is actually getting some space now and circling on the outside, throwing right jabs out of the southpaw stance and holding Arenas off by simply pushing out with his right palm. Arenas starts clipping him behind the head, swinging away with both arms and slapping past Martinez and then pulling his hands back to dope-slap him. Martinez is content to just take the slaps until the final bell.

That actually didn't start out as such a bad round for MM.

Martinez then goes and sits in his corner and has his face checked out. Meanwhile Arenas jumps around looking gleeful.

Pretty clear who won here. :yep

They're showing highlights of the fight on split-screen during Arenas' victory interview. It was that fun.

Arenas seems like a bright, good-natured kid from just half-listening to his interview.

 

They just ran a text message poll "pop quiz" asking what the fastest-ending fight of Luis Concepcion's career is.

Options were: 30 seconds, 36 seconds, and 50 seconds.

Do they not realize that most of the TV audience tuned into boxing knows about Boxrec?

It isn't really good "trivia" when it's just a matter of everybody racing to look up his record.

There is a synchronized dance going on in the ring. It's like Britney Spears/NSync style backup dancers - a big coed group of about a dozen, all clad in yellow and green robes and boxing trunks (bras for the girls). The word "Fantastic!!!" is written in English in a funky white font across the canvas. They're all dancing a very hyperactive and herky-jerky dance to some crazy aggro reggaeton.

OH AND DID I MENTION THERE'S A DUDE IN A YELLOW AND GREEN BOXING ROBE AND A GIANT ****ING WOLF COSTUME WITH AN ENORMOUS HEAD DANCING BEHIND EVERYBODY ELSE IN THE RING???????????????????

 

I swear to ****ing Christ that wasn't just an attempt to get people's attention.

I think that made me start tripping...
