Just a silly trivia question for everyone that I mulled over while looking at the Fritzie Zivic thread. It was stated how Fritzie fought 'everyone', and I agree. However, I was thinking of fighters who really did fight everyone and couldn't even get a crack at the whip like Fritzie did. So my question is, who fought at least 10 world champs and couldn't get a title shot? I found three without going too crazy on it. Just something for a Friday morning guys.
I think Burley only fought about 3 or 4 champs. My first thought was Ralph 'Tiger' Jones but he only fought 8 champs. So this is a more difficult question than one would think.
I can think of four off the top of my head- * indicates beat this champion at least once Jimmy Bivins Ezzard Charles* Joe Louis Archie Moore* Harold Johnson Joey Maxim* Jersey Joe Walcott Melio Bettina* Anton Christoforidis* Gus Lesnevich* Teddy Yarosz* Billy Soose* Lee Savold* (Paper heavyweight champion) Lloyd Marshall Bobo Olson Ezzard Charles* Freddie Mills* Archie Moore Joey Maxim* Jake LaMotta* Anton Christoforidis* Teddy Yarosz* Babe Risko* Ceferino Garcia Del Flanagan Joey Giardello Virgil Akins* Ralph Dupas* Kid Gavilan* Gene Fullmer Johnny Bratton* Johnny Saxton* Willie Pastrano* Jimmy Carter Beau Jack* Sandy Saddler* Johnny Risko John Henry Lewis Bob Olin* Tommy Loughran* Bob Godwin Mickey Walker* Max Baer* Max Schmeling Jack Sharkey* Jack Delaney* Jimmy Slattery Mike McTigue Paul Berlenbach* Gene Tunney
Flanagan and Bivins are good additions. I had Risko and Marshall as 1 and 2. For what it's worth, my 3rd fighter was Famoso Gomez of all people. I say that with amazement because it is harder for a latter day fighter to get on this list because everyone today gets a title shot. Again, good additions.
Just thought of another one. Angel Robinson Garcia. Broke the record here. 15 world champs without a title shot. But in his case he got lazy. He was a good contender at one time but just fell into the journeyman role by having a good jaw, instinctive defensive reflexes and a yen for the bottle.
Everett "Bigfoot" Martin 15 Frankie Wallace 14 Paul Pirrone 14 Peter Buckley 13 Leo Houck 11 Joe Lohman 10 Brian Nielsen 10
Bukakke, I was just coming on here to add Paul Pirrone when I see you beat me to it. As for the others, great research, my man.
Holman Williams, although fighting a who's who of welter and middle, actually only fought 5 world champs. Fields, Purrity and Imparato all appear to have less than 10 also.
Afraid not, on any of them. I thought I had a couple in Alfredo Urbina, but he came in with 9 champs on his roster and Marion Wilson had about 8.
On closer inspection, it seems that Ismael Abdul actually fought 10 world champs (yes, I'm surprised too!): Briedis Glowacki Gassiev Hernandez Huck Haye Adamek Maccarinelli Fragomeni Vlodarczyk
Dude, you are absolutely right. I had given a cursory check on these fighters and I can honestly say the IBO, WBF and Inter-continental BS titles were just shimmering in my face. I should have mentioned to draw the line at WBA, WBC, IBF and WBO, but Abdul meets the criteria. Good catch, Bukkake and good find, Ra's.
