marciano was also over 190 a couple of times. However, even a guy as big as ali came in under 200 a few times also. Its true that with the extra day it is posible marciano could have cut down and make an artificial weight only to pile it back on like modern fighters do. This is after all why there are so many 6 foot fighters below middle weights now. most fighters today are trading in the wrong weight anyway. A better question could be what weight should todays boxers be fighting at.
Except that he wouldn't have . He wouldn't have become a unified 168 lbs champion 2day . If anything , many of d last 3-4 decades or so suffered from d lack of opportunity 2 unify titles because of corruption etc , and will forever b called alphabet titlists / contenders / journeymen by d likes of janitor/mcvey/My2Sense because of it . 4 d reason above Monzon would not have done better 2day than during is time , not 2 mention that he fit his weight class . Even unifying d MW division 2day doesn't mean **** as it is **** , except from Martinez who became overrated primarily due 2 it . David Tua would have been a champion in any era not having Lewis , Akinwande , both Klitschkos and similarly sized men all together in 1 division . Many of d late 80s 2 mid 90s SMWs would have been dominant in 2day's MW division . Same 4 murderers row and many others . 1 could say that Ezzard Charles suffered from not getting a title shot and it will b true financially and (2 many) legacy wise but in fact he was d best 175lbs fighter of his time .
One of the first names that comes to mind is one that accomplished greatness anyways- Willie Pep. With the pure boxing skill and instincts he had, he'd have been practically unbeatable in the modern era where fights rarely (if ever) get as dirty as his affairs with Saddler turned out to be. A more conservatively officiated modern era translates very favorably to any of the old-time pure boxers. Not to mention the increased marketability of the smaller fighters today- Pep would've been wildly popular and wealthier with his combination of charisma and skill.
