Found somthing strange in Briggs Vs. Liakovich

I remember seeing that fight live and noticing the same thing. I have also seen the Showtime clock count out of sequence. Wish I could remember what fight that happened in.
Wasn't this fight in Liakovich's hometown in Arizona?
Doubt they'd try to screw the hometown kid.
Maybe the digi on screen clock was on the fritz, But by going off of when the clock stopped, the bell should have rung just as Sergei was going down the second time.

man, this fight seems fixed. liakovich had no business doing what he did in that round. and that clock stopping seemed very suspicious.

 

I definitely remember that happening. The thing is though if you pick up the count from the time Sergei first went down and you count silently to yourself you will see that Briggs still got him out of there within the round. The other thing that shocked me was that Sergei just stood there rather than move out of the way. He looked as though he was too tired to even move, which is strange considering the fact that the fight was fought at a very slow pace. All he needed to do was stay on his feet and it's not as though Shannon was really coming after him.

I actually read an article about the pre-fight antics that suggested that Briggs had rattled Sergei in the press conference and the overall leadup to the fight. We obviously have no idea how much the mental warfare came into play but it did seem as though Sergei had been a little unnerved by the things Shannon was saying. Combine that possibility with the fact that Shannon hurt him in the first round and you have a recipe for a fight that has one guy reluctant to come in. You have to admit that Lyakhovich took a lot more chances in the Brewster fight and Lamon's not exactly a soft puncher.

 

The clock stops for approximatly 13 seconds, also the ref waves off the fight once Sergei falls out of the ring. Isn't he supposed to get a count of 20 seeing as he fell through the ropes?

Instead of giving a 20 count the ref waves it off after about a 4 count and Sergei was sitting up reaching for the ropes already. That fight has always pissed me off.

Guys don't get screwed in the U.S. eh? Prime example.

 

Neither fighter deserved to win this fight, Boring as hell.

 

Technically, a fighter is supposed to get a 20-count after being knocked out of the ring but referees make judgement calls like that all the time. I'm sure you've seen guys get knocked down (and out) in the ring and the referee doesn't even bother with the count or cuts it off after a few seconds when he sees the guy's not getting up. Sergei was in bad shape and the referee knew it. There was no problem with that stoppage whatsoever as it was quite clear that Sergei was not getting up.

Yeah i know what you mean, like Smoger's stoppage in Pavlik - Taylor 1 i just disagree with you. at a 3 count he was reaching for the ring ropes and with maybe 10 seconds left in the fight it isn't like he's going to take any more punishment, and in a title fight.

 

In the context of a fight, fighters instinctively act according to the situation. It's almost a reflex action. You get knocked down so what do you do? You try to get up. Sergei got knocked out of the ring so he reached for the ropes. There was a guy who got knocked out cold one time and was throwing punches while on the canvas. Simon Brown.

 

Whether there's a minute left or the bell has already rung, the referee is still required to make a decision based on his judgement on whether or not the fighter is fit to continue. The time remaining is inconsequential.

 

funny I was just looking at the record of the other simon brown, the undefeated one that had that fiasco and made a comback, the guy that beat winky early on, what happened to his comeback

Liakhovich getting up and grabbing the ropes as nearly a reflexive action? I don't know about that one, he was pretty fried, but that was no auto pilot type of work there. I think he would have beat the twenty count seeing how far up he was at four.

I do know what you mean. I remember seeing Chuck Lidell and many others still trying to fight reflexively when they are clearly on another planet at that point, however, this didn't seem to be the case to me. They could have definitely taken more time to find out if it was.

If you want to think conspiracy, you can submit that maybe that is why they stopped it, because they knew Sergei would easily beat a twenty second count and therfore the clock making the thing go the cards.
