Just finished reading Four Kings again. I think everyone on here knows its a good book and I'm sure everyone has a good idea of the whole story of what went on during that era. Had a couple of intersting arguments/discussions about the merits of the 4 fighters earlier on. I was wondering who the brit forum think was the best of the 4. People in here have more sense than the general forum twats (well most of you do) so I was wondering what the consensus is. Let me just qualify this by saying the question I'm asking is who do you think was the best overall. Not just in the fights between the men. I'm not looking for 'oh Leonard was the best boxer but Hagler was the toughest fighter and Duran had the nicest beard' or any of that. Just weigh it all up and pick which 1 was best. I'll be interested to see which way this one pans out
Has to be Ray Leonard. Conclusively beat his big rival in his own division and the one from the division below. Narrowly beat the guy from the higher division after a long lay off.
I think Leonard was the best fighter of the 4 but I think Durans achievements in dominating at Lightweight for years then winning titles at 147, 154 and 160 gives him the most impressive career, although he obviously suffered in the H2H matchups between the four because he was the oldest and smallest.
Well, if your doing it just based H2H of these four, Sugar Ray Leonard is the king to me. He beat all of the other members of the 'Fab Four'. Amazing achievement beating those three ATG's.
Really been meaning to pick up this book. Everything I've seen on it insisted it was a fine read. I think it's hard to conclusively pick one, buuut I'd have to go with Leonard, though I do have a soft spot for Duran.
Ah. My bad. Laziness. Well then it's much closer. For me, I'd say Duran. Didn't just win titles in multiple divisions but also managed to have a long reign as LW champ.
Fantastic read, and a great insight for those who were not around at the time (like me). I believe the argument will always come between leonard and duran, I believe leonard is the better of the two...just. However I have a soft spot for Hearns and Hagler, two of my favourite fighters.
Yeah, the book is excellent. I think Duran ranks highest out of the four, to win titles from 135 to 160 is phenomenal. Leonard is a close second though who is the only fighter out of the four that I;m not that much of a fan of for some reason.
definitely one of the best boxing books that I have read & I have read plenty.interesting to see that tommy hearns has not had a mention so far he took part in one of the most explosive fights with haggler never in a boring fight ,chin was his only weakness. If your asking for the best though it has be SRL although he did get favours from refs along the way he still did what was needed to win
Hagler-Hearns is the most overated fight in boxing history, its only remotely competitive for the first 90 seconds, after that (cut not withstanding) its obvious who is going to win.
Great book, read it recently myself. The best of the four? Judging by head to head, Leonard is the pick. However, Hagler's loss to Sugar Ray wasn't conclusive and so Marvin pushes him all the way for me.
