If only greatness was measured on who you'd bet on!

His accomplishments within the weightclass don't stack up is all i'm saying.

I don't disagree, but that too is an unreliable yardstick.

Billy Conn did not amass a long list of victims at 175lbs.

Mickey Walker lacked defining fights at 147lbs.

Harry Greb's 160lbs resume is not exactly abundant

Jack O Brien never defended his 175lbs crown.

Do we say they are not greats at those respective weights?

Head to head is very significant, imo.

Jeff Clarke and Norfolk have a shout.
BTW Choynski was well past his best by 1903.

Yeah but only if those fighters at some point in their career really proved themselves. If one dominates cans he might look like world-beater, doesn´t mean he is one.

Kid Norfolk, Young Stribling, Harry Greb, Tommy Gibbons.

I don't think the light-heavyweight title really kicked off until Tommy Loughran held it.

Dominating cans was never on the horizon.

I was referring to men who are generally accepted to be great fighters at their optimum weight, irrespective of their achievments there.
eg. How many 175pound champs would beat Langford, or Conn?

How many middleweight champs would beat Greb?

How many 175 pounders would beat Charles ,and Tunney ?

Yes but the difference between Jones and Langford, was that Jones won the light heavyweight title whereas Langford didn't. The thread topic is about the best lightheavys who NEVER won the crown..... Myself not being an expert on light heavyweight history, I'm not the best person to give opinions, but I might be able to see a good argument for Langford being among that company.

Conn did achieve greatness at lhw in my opinion.

Walker's ww greatness should be questioned.

Greb also achieved greatness at mw as well as lhw.

O'brien as a great lhw isn't a label i'd be willing to throw around.

It depends on what your definition of greatness is I suppose. Someone who reached the pinnacle of their division? Someone who enters the hof? Someone who's a top ten in a division? Someone who'd beat the majority of champs past and present?

Hard to say. But I would say langford didn't achieve greatness in the division. As for who i'd expect him to beat, that's another thread I believe.

Personally h2h is a tiebreak for me. Let's say I decide 5 guys go in a certain tier, i'd rank them based on the results of an imaginery round robin.

I'm wondering how can Sam Langford possibly not be a great light-heavyweight ?

Add Jimmy Bivins and Lloyd Marshall to the list.

I think Bivins was more blatantly ducked regarding the Light-Heavyweight title. Guy was an absolute menace around 1941-1942.

Bivins actually beat the champ though but it was a couple of pound above the limit.

He didn't actually do that much at the weight. I wouldn't have him in my top ten from top of my head.
