Since Fury dethroned the great Wladimir Klitschko and opened up the exciting heavyweight division we have today. (AJ/Ruiz and Fury/Wilder world championship rematches beckoning) People talk about it like it was ten years ago for some reason. We hear things like the fight was boring etc etc and I'm sure it was for some. Fury isn't everyone's cup of tea, obviously. However, I absolutely loved it. Having watched Wladimir completely clear out the division for so long, I had my doubts about whether Fury could do it or not. But it was obvious from the off that Fury's style, inside and outside the ring, was a nightmare for Wlad. The haters have made their excuses for Wladimir, which they do every time Fury performs at an elite level. But any rational boxing fans knows that Fury boxed a perfect gameplan, to the best of his ability. His constant head movement, feinting and willingness to wrestle with Wlad, was the perfect recipe to outpoint a man who was never outpointed in 69 fights. We know what posters are going to swamp this thread with the same repetitive drivel. Nonetheless, one of the greatest away from home British world championship performances ever deserves to be commended on its anniversary.
Since then the division has been in shambles. Fury turned out to been caught on Nandrolone and has been out of the division for years, only to return fighting walkovers and Wilder. All the belts have been scattered, and are about to get scattered again. The 3 top guys (not counting the obvious #1 Ruiz for a moment) with the exception of expected roider Joshua don't unify belts. Many of the top guys have been caught juicing, with Miller, Fury, Whyte, Ortiz, Povetkin as prime examples. It's a shirtshow!
It's been a lot more exciting than the Klitschko era, anyway. AJ has had several entertaining world title fights. Wilder the same. Fury/Wilder was excellent. And now, we have two brilliant upcoming world championship rematches in AJ/Ruiz and Fury/Wilder. It's night and day compared to the Klitschko era. Politics and juicing have been issues for a very long time. That's boxing as a whole unfortunately.
If you could have removed Joe Louis, Mike T and Larry Holmes from their era's, we probably would have seen the same thing. That doesn't mean it's better. At least now it's out in the open you mean, clarity that many of the guys at the top are cheaters and don't get punished nearly enough or at all for their cheating.
No but it’s hilariously hypocritical for the guy who created this thread to moan about endless Fury chat clogging the place up.
It was a non fight in reality, nothing really happened and was very boring to watch. That said, it still is one of the biggest achievements in British boxing for Fury to go to away soil and dethrone the champ in such a fashion with the way he nullified Wlad
A truly great win but a terribly boring "fight". The win has also been tainted with Fury's subsequent failed drugs test. The question of was Fury juiced up for the win will always hang over it like a black cloud. Really disappointed Fury turned his back on the agreed rematch as well.
Endless Fury hate, bud. The OP is a respectful post commending a great win for a British fighter on its anniversary day.
Just to note that the Nandrolone failure was from a test in Feb 15, either before or after he fought Hammer. I read a report in which Hammer's team felt like no justice was served at all, and apparently the win was to be struck off Fury's record, which it never was. Hammer stated at the time that he could not believe how strong Fury was and was not surprised when he tested positive.
Good achievement, terrible fight. I would compare it to going to Barcelona and nicking a one nil win against ten men.
If you’re a fan of the technical side of boxing it’s not so boring, plus for me it’s about the tension involved in the bigger fights, that creates the excitement. It’s the same with big football/rugby games, they often become tactical and tight affairs. Most of Mayweather’s fights were boring if you’re following the same logic... I would argue you aren’t a boxing fan if you are going to keep going on about how dull a fight it was. Stick to watching overmatched fighters getting pummelled if that’s your bag.
I’m not so sure that analogy works. Yes, some tight games can be exciting, but it’s really no surprise that the likes of Liverpool 4 Newcastle 3 are cited as some of the best games ever. Also, there can be lots of action in a 0-0 game. Fury Klitschko was like a 0-0 with no shots, no corners and neither keeper made a save.
