    Round 10

Paredes is throwing bombs, headhunting. Short and compact right hand leads and left hooks by Paredes, but he isn't cutting the ring off before he throws, just hustling in while Sanchez keeps moving laterally to disrupt his rhythm. Body shots by Sanchez, turning into them and twisting his entire upper half around, repositioning his own head in the process so Paredes doesn't have a static target. Wisdom from the youngster. Paredes throws a right up top and Sanchez bumps it away off his left bicep, raising it quickly and then reaching out to grab Paredes around the neck and pull him close. Paredes is jabbing and hooking on the way in, but can't reach the chin of Sanchez as he pulls back. Counter body shots and hooks on the chin by Sanchez. Paredes comes forward looking to land a big one and Sanchez brings down the hammer, BIG counter right & left hook combo, and Paredes is sent onto all fours. Not hurt, but outta time and chances with the bell sounding.

    10-8 Sanchez

    96-93 Sanchez

Without that, I'd say this could've been a draw (though most judges will probably favor Sanchez's activity throughout anyway) but with the knockdown and with Sanchez being the California dude, forget it.

I scored this Fox Sports 1 main event for Sanchez, 8-2 rounds, 98-91 points, giving Paredes the 4th and 9th rounds, and scoring the 10th round 10-8 for Sanchez because of the clean knockdown. I thought the 4th and 9th rounds (the two I gave Paredes) were the only really close rounds in the fight, and I thought only the 9th was difficult to score.

Paredes began the fight moving forward, working his jab to head and body for the first 30 seconds, backing up Sanchez, then Sanchez lunged forward with a missed jab+R body combo and clinched. Paredes resumed moving forward, working a sporadic jab for another 30 seconds, then Sanchez landed a cuffing overhand right. In summary, this was a reasonably entertaining fight, fought at a decent pace, featuring a consistently solid performance by Sanchez. Paredes was technically the one more often moving forward, nominally stalking Sanchez, but he rarely showed urgency in his attack, his jab was ineffective, his foot speed was rather slow, and his ring movement was not very good. Sanchez entirely controlled the ringspace in this fight, generally working the periphery of the ring, keeping his distance from Paredes, using his 2-inch reach advantage to work behind his jab. Yet Sanchez was also the more frequent aggressor, moving forward into the pocket to initiate exchanges, and often using his jab as a rangefinder to initiate effective combinations to the head and body. Defensively, Sanchez would sometimes back out of the pocket with reasonable foot speed, causing Paredes to short-arm numerous punches during the fight, but his primary maneuver was to initiate clinches, either when he would run out of space for his own attacks, or when Paredes would get too close to him. The referee Hedgepath was very permissive towards the clinches, never issuing any warnings (Malignaggi speculated as early as the 5th round that a warning for excessive clinching could have been coming), and several times letting the clinches play out for a long time before breaking them. The issue of possibly excessive clinching aside, this was a solid performance and a good win for Sanchez against an experienced opponent.
