Candelaria is staying in the pocket and throwing jabs and push-pole rights at the head of Nevin, swinging in big pendulous uppercuts to keep Nevin from countering. Nevin leans to either side and loads up big hooks, forcing Candelaria to give some ground. Candelaria is dragging in big uppers from behind the back and falling in to clinch as Nevin hooks into his body. Nevin ducks a jab and chopping right and comes up hooking. Candelaria grabs and clasps him. Nevin jabs Candelaria in the mouth and digs some hooks on the body. Big looping power combo on the chin nailing Candelaria and knocking him into the ropes.

I'll be honest, that was a bit sloppier work than I'd like to see from an Olympian, but compared to your standard pro debut that gets high marks. Nevin looked poised and confident, going for the KO from the opening bell of the 1st until the closing bell of the 6th.

I'm guessing the judges all gave Candelaria the fifth? That was the one Malignaggi suggested he might've nicked a share of, and I'd agree.

 

Alexis Santos vs. Sylvester Baron, 6 rounds @ heavyweight

 

Round 1

Santos is rushing in thrusting his powerful arms out straight with left jabs and then clubbing with the right. Baron moves in and wraps Santos in a bear hug, leaning down and grinding into the smaller man to stifle his work. Big plugs on the body from Santos. Baron clinches. Break ordered by the ref. Santos is rushing in, arms swinging at his sides. Right hand lead by Baron, ducked with a slick diagonal move downward by Santos. Big right hand lead and left hook by Santos catching Baron standing upright at mid-range. Baron dips into the ropes and bounces forward into Santos to force a clinch. Santos is jabbing up from a partial crouch. Right hand lead on the chin by Santos. Baron pushes down on Santos' head to put him in a bowing position, and is warned by the ref. Another push down by Baron, another warning. Santos rushes in to flurry and Baron wraps up his arms, dragging him into the ropes.

Cuban heavyweights Luis Ortiz and Mike Perez will both appear on FS1 next month, albeit on separate cards. (Ortiz headlining April 3rd against Monte Barret; Perez on April 28th with some Romero fella)
