Santos is jumping in and jabbing the body, tossing right hands up at the head of Baron. Nonstop clinching from Baron, pushing down on Santos' thickset shoulders and pawing jabs on the breaks as he creates distance seeking refuge on the ropes until the next clinch. Santos is tagging him with single jabs and overhand rights from a crouch as he leaps in, getting snuffed out with clinches every time he builds up steam.

Round 3

Big explosive flurry rushing in by Santos, Baron sent reeling into the ropes. Santos is faking the jab up top and twisting in with a right downstairs, then finally delivering the payoff left hook around Baron's guard. Clinching and pushing by Baron. A few long flailing jabs and rights by Baron as he backs out. Santos moves in, loading up powerful left hooks from behind the lead hip. Baron puts up a turtle shell and squats down to meet the hooks with the outer parts of his gloves.

Round 4

Santos is ripping the big left hook on the face of Baron, whose nose is now bleeding. Santos is catapulting in with the left hook from outside as Baron jogs away, countering with ponderous wild uppercuts. Baron is pumping his fists up as though underwater. Big left and right hooks combined at short range by Santos, hurting Baron, yet smothering himself by staying atop him while Baron lays on him and lets Santos press him up against the ropes. Long clinch by Baron. Santos blocks a jab stepping in and gets caught in a body-lock in the arms of Baron.

Round 5

Santos is hooking Baron into submission. Baron first attempts to pry Santos off with big slow left and right uppercuts, and then yields to let Santos carry him across the ring. Santos is slapping Baron across the head with fast short left and right hooks as Baron starts to slump, unable to summon the strength to counter with those big energy-sapping uppercuts or secure a clinch. Baron keeps exposing the back of his head as he sags further down, grabbing at Santos' waist. Baron tries shoving his way out of a corner. Santos pins him on the ropes and hooks across the back and top of Baron's head. Baron is caught by a big right hook on the side of the head...another...BIG LEFT HOOK while Baron is sitting on the middle rope already out cold!!!!! HEAD SNAPPED AROUND HARD. :scaredas:

Baron didn't need that last shot, arguably the last two or three. Inattentive refereeing there by Robert Benoit, hopefully not responsible for anything tragic here...

 

Sylvester Baron was able to sit up on his stool unassisted.

 

Santos improves to 13-0 (11).

After seeing that Baron was okay, he proceeded to lean over the ropes to address Paulie Malignaggi at the broadcast table, calling himself a work in progress. Malignaggi gives him a DeNiro face (inverted smile) and nod of approval with a thumbs up.

 

Even though in the short-term Baron seems okay, that final left hook could really be problematic for him. It really was just unnecessary. Brutal and unnecessary.

 

Julian Williams tells Jessica Rosales he saw when Freddy Hernandez fought on TV several times before he came up himself, but he says he won't be intimidated by that. "He wasn't a great fighter or anything, just a guy I saw on TV, good fighter though..."
