Sr says he learned the shoulder roll from trainers in Detroit and that techniques like this will die out because modern trainers don`t have the right kind of knowledge, where does Sr rank amoung the all-time great trainers? And are trainers less savvy now?

Floyd Mayweather Sr is a great Boxing trainer no doubt particularly of Defence but I think his brother Floyd Mayweather’s Uncle Roger Mayweather is an even better trainer particularly offensively.

Another great trainer who died recently was Curtis Cokes who incidentally was a great world champion boxer. The late slim Jim Robinson was pretty good as well.

Fighters today are athletes, not technically skilled boxers.

Compared to the early 80`s yes, if you leave out elites like Bud and Loma.

Is there anyone else aside from
Floyd who’s executed the shoulder roll at an elite level and relied pretty much on that? Guys like Canelo, cotto, Toney apply it but it’s not their primary defense. Even though Toney slipped a lot of punches, he got hit as often too and relied more on his reflexes rather than shoulder roll fundamentals.

Also think you need some serious physical advantages to be very effective with this, such as height and reach advantage. It’s pretty much impossible to should roll a punch when it’s coming from above rather than the bottom.
