Most agree Patterson should have gotten the decision against Jimmy Ellis in July 1968 to become WBA Champion.

Let's say Patterson defends against Bonavena in the summer of 1969
(Bonavena had done well against Frazier) and Patterson outpoints him (as he did later in his career). Patterson would have just beaten a rough and tough opponent.

Frazier had earlier defended against Quarry in June 1969.

The stage is now set for the Feb 1970 Unification fight between
Frazier and Patterson (instead of Frazier - Ellis).

Weights: Frazier 205 lbs Patterson 192 lbs

    Location: Madison Square Garden

Who wins????? (a young Frazier vs an experienced Patterson...and
maybe an opportunity for Floyd to redeem himself for the Liston disasters)

i think fraziers pressure and relentlesness get him through. however Patterson was a fast mother****er and his left hook was frightening. if he could time it well like catching Frazier popping up, he might have gottem outa there

I had the Patterson-Ellis match a draw with neither of them really looking all that great. Pattersons hook by that stage wasn't dropping his opponents anymore, he did catch Ringo with a good one but it wasn't enough that late in his career. Floyd still boxed skillfully and his draw with Quarry should have been a win, but he wouldn't have been able to hold off or stand up to smokin Joe for very long.

Patterson could punch hard, and as anyone knows, Frazier had a glass chin. Punchers always will knock Frazier out early. Patterson TKO3.

On second thoughts, Frazier smothers Patterson by keeping the action on the inside; he out-muscles him onto the ropes; and finally beats him to a pulp. Frazier TKO4.

They were both bob-and-weavers, both pressure fighters and both left-hookers. Patterson was quicker, but the problem for him is that Frazier was bigger, stronger, busier more powerful, more durable, and fought like he was in there to rip your heart out. Frazier bullies Patterson and overwhelms him into a stoppage within seven rounds, I'd say.

Frazier by stoppage inside 8rounds,too much pressure ,Patterson ,though still a very good fighter had lost a step, and the delivery of his hook wasnt as speedy ,or effective,Joe,s relentless pressure wears Floyd down .

Frazier just too relentless, too strong.
