Francesco Damiani disgraceful quit job vs McCall

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think Damiani also has the distinction of being the only fighter ranked top 10 at the time of the fight that Mercer beat.

 

I don't think Ring had him ranked anymore by January of 1991, though this all from memory. And since he was holding the WBO title, this would have conflicted with any of the other sanctioning bodies having him listed as a contender. Technically I think its fair to say that he was probably worthy of being one of the lower echelon top 10 best in the world, but from memory I don't recall any official rating by that point.

 

I don't see anything disgraceful here , not in shape, he got a beating, sustained a damaged nose, with both eyes swollen, and decided, with no prospect of winning, he had taken enough.

 

I allways hoped that Damiani would fight Bruno or mason for the European title in 88-89 their was talk of it but it never came off .pitty would have been interesting.

I remember seeing him lying there face down on the canvas not moving after Mercer popped him on the chin...and I said "and you wanna be my latex salesman"....

 

Pretty sure he was ahead on points against Mercer when the fight ended.

At that point, he was outboxing Ray.

Rays toughness and power got him through that fight.

 

The guy was a good fighter. Pity he peaked as an amateur. Damiani did a great job against Tyrell Biggs.

 

At least Damiani still had his pants on.
