Anyone have insights on his training regimen around the time of the Moorer fight? Been trying to contact Soderstrom to no avail. I need this for the final part of my doctorate thesis.
National Geographic did an article on this in the 90's. You should be able to find it on microfilm in the library.
Nutrition was good. Poolside. BBQ. Roids. Spar. Rest. Watch the Rugger. Repeat. 8 weeks of that you'd be very feel too.
Botha turned in an excellent performance against Moorer, but he could have had a bigger gas tank. Until later when he was just going thru the motions, Botha always had a real fighter's mentality. Would have done more if he had focussed on preparation IMO.
When he was preparing to fight Lewis I went up to Big Bear to watch him train. Technically, I went to watch Shane Mosley but, at that time, everybody used the same facility which was in the corner of a regular, health club gym. After Shane finished, Botha and Abel Sanchez came in and I stayed to watch. Leaving, I thought that the combination of Sanchez, the "fight plan" being trained, and Botha's ability could get somebody killed. And not Lennox Lewis.
Cornbread and jellybeans were his favorite prefight meal....and of course, those little chocolate covered doughnuts...washed down with a Nehi grape soda.
The White Buffalo would dine on white chicken meat, white beans, white rice — smothered in white gravy — and a slice of white bread. Wash it down with a bottle of vintage white wine. Then some vanilla ice cream for dessert.
In all seriousness Frans Botha had pretty good stamina. He went the distance a lot and maintained a steady work rate throughout a fight . I’m guessing he did a lot of sparring and possibly other cardio. I know he wasn’t a pretty specimen but I wouldn’t say he was out of shape either
