Yeah no kidding. So now all of a sudden its a knock on someone to get beaten by Lennox Lewis and Mike Tyson?? Strange post indeed.

 

Where again is the smallish come-forward slugger with no speed and limited strength in the modern heavyweight division? Where is the Layne an-alogy? Is it anyone better than Bobby Crabtreee? I think Francois Botha would be a stretch.

 

Agreed. I've been arguing in two threads and with about three posters who keep pointing out that Witherspoon's best wins were ilegit just because they were "close."

Layne did take advantage of great or otherwise top fighters on off nights. Bruno snatched defeat from victory against a very poor looking Spoon.

And if I was Bruno, I would rather have some great wins to my credit. Or even some wins on the next few tiers down.

Bruno's win resume is mostly comparable to Layne's victories over Turkey Thompson, Bill Peterson, and guys like that. A name on the slide or a fringe journeyman. Bruno doesn't have the Charles, Walcott, Satterfield wins.

Layne was more erratic but he demonstrated a higher ceiling and again..was thrown to the wolves. At least Layne fought the Brions, Earl Walls, Jacksons, Bakers, LaStarzas, and Matthews of his day.

 

Yeah, I was referring to his non-title "build up" fights mostly.
'Name' guys like Coetzee, Tillis, Ferguson, Bugner, C.Williams looked like flabby or otherwise unfit.

 

6-1, 200 sometimes blubbery pounds and a "rangy" 75" reach makes for a midget heavyweight by modern standards. The only guys to survive with those shortcomings had exceptional speed and coordination. They were not tough guy plodders.

It makes no sense to credit a man for the fights that he lost while giving no credit to a man who lost to better men.. Bruno was beaten by four heavyweight champions in their primes, two of which make most people's top 10, and for the most part all of whom he gave good fights to. Layne lost to guys on all levels and sometimes emphatically. The " who lost to who" argument doesn't favor Layne. Sorry..

Not true I posted a report from nat fleischer yesterday. Fleischer did not have Charles winning the fight

UP had the fight even
