Okay, then I stand corrected. SOME of the reports say he lost.

McCall? You really believe he was a great fighter and the genuine champion of the world?

And that win didn't really convince anyone McCall was the new best in the world. We all just reevaluated what we thought of Lewis after he got sparked by a fringe contender with a sparring partner mentality.

I've posted a round by round before that had Layne winning a close fight. The fight was described as Layne's best performance and the rare fight he showed quickness and a good strong jab.

This is such a shallow claim.

Losing to the best doesn't mean much, if you didn't prove yourself against the rest.

Layne fought 80 fights in a 6 year period, he lost to the best too, but he also beat two of the best, he also fought the rest. Literally he fought the rest. I believe around 20+ fighters were rated or recently rated contenders at the time he faced them. He beat some of the rest at first, as his career wound down, he lost more often than he won, some decisions didn't go his way as well.

Calling Spoon and Bonecrushers prime heavyweight Champions doesn't change the fact it was a fat Spoon and Bonecrusher.

Because Layne fought guys on all levels at a brutal frequency with very few soft touches in between.

Layne didn't have the luxury of feasting off the fringe in between sporadic cash outs against Lewis, Tyson, Spoon and Bonecrusher.

Layen as a result at least grabbed the better wins.

I don't think these guys had exceptional speed or coordination. And yeah, I'm sure on a modern diet, Layne could probably stuff himself as well as these guys. He was actually probably taller than a couple of them too.

No longer relevant, doubtful that he ever was, lost his last 3 fights, he isn't rated and achieved just one decent win that enabled the encumbent champion to have a gimme defence.

    Fleischer had it a draw.

In a blatantly obvious hometown decision, Referee Jack Dempsey scored 2 rounds for Layne, 1 round for Charles with 7 rounds even. Most objective observers felt Charles had won. During the fight Layne butted Charles repeatedly without caution from the referee.
Legendary cornerman and trainer Ray Arcel said,"Instead of adding dignity to the fight game, Dempsey has added disgrace."

"While there still may reamin lingering doubts in the minds of some fight fans as to the superiority of Rex Layne over Ezzard Charles, the International Boxing Club made its stand clear Saturday by offering Layne a title shot at the winner of the Rocky Marciano-Jersey Joe Walcott fight. Even as the fans continued their arguments over referee Jack Dempsey's verdict Friday, which gave the underdog Layne a surprise decision over Charles, the IBC stepped forward with its blessing for Layne." -Salt Lake Tribune

    • Salt Lake Tribune - 6-3-1 Charles
    • Rocky Mountain News - 5-3-2 Charles

I heard an awful rumor that mcvey has been reply to everything I post obsessively for months now.

I call bs, mcvey is so busy with sick family members and traveling the world there is no way he's responding to hundreds of posts without me writing back a single time...no way, not my mcvey

You are correct, a doppelganger has replaced him while he is on his global travels and said replacement is currently humiliating you on every thread you participate in. McVey himself could hardly improve on his performance .

I should not be surprised if on his return he would not be content for his stand in to continue with the one-sided thrashing :good
I'm sure he will be gratified to know you found the death of his Mother In Law a subject for humour ,pancreatic cancer is hilarious isn't? .Gratified but not surprised.:-(

Layne was an early TV favorite back in those days and he had a huge fan base. He was a strong fighter with an excellent right hand. He was good enough to beat the more highly skilled Walcott via mauling him along the ropes and keeping the fight in close. It was a good win for him. I've never seen his bout with Charles but it's not a stretch that he did to Charles what he did to Jersey Joe at least in part. I think it is fair to say that the bout was reasonably close based on the scoring provided so far.

Also McCall was never hwt champion of the world.

From what I've read the Charles fight was close. Layne's power is suspect at top level imo. Who of any note did he ko ?

Rhythm guitar, blues harp, and vocals. Music is the only job where they can't force you to retire ( unless of course no one turns up for your gigs  )

However I only do it for Err hum love, not money. ( You never know what the Inland Revenue read these days.)
