Ok calm down, we just made peace last week I'm just trying to figure out why you made this thread. ****kell Lastarza Layne Matthews were not among marcianos best victims None of those 4 were top contenders of the 50s If I made a top 15 list of the 50s none of those men would make the cut Why don't you make it fair by making a thread of Bruno vs the best of the 50s?
Ok here are my picks Bruno KO 1 Matthews Bruno TKO 7 Cokkell Bruno TKO 13 Lastarza Bruno TKO 6 Rex Layne or Layne KO 12 Bruno
I would rank Layne behind Liston Johansson Patterson Moore Johnson Valdes Marciano Charles Walcott Baker Henry Machen Williams Folley Jackson So that puts him at 16th for the decade I do think Layne at his peak was a dangerous fighter, that Marciano and Charles back to back KO loss really seemed to ruin him mentally
What I made the thread about is relevant, why I made it is not. Two of the four of those named got title shots, one of the other two was in a final eliminator for a title shot, and the remaining one was rated as high as number 2 at one point. Why don't you make the threads you want, and I'll do the same? Don't you like the results I'm getting?
He is clearly behind the people who held the title, but you could make a case for having him ahead of Johnson, Valdez, Baker, Henry, Machen, Williams, Folley and Jackson. He should probably be ahead of half those guys to be honest.
I don't know. I think Layne is a level above these guys. Layne was matched tough, he was inconsistent and lost some, but he grinded out some impressive wins and even after been thrown to the wolves had some decent gutsy outings where the judges just didn't see it his way. Layne may have deserved nods over Neuhaus, Baker, and even LaStarza, which would have done a lot for his resume post-Marciano. He was ahead against Jackson in the rematch when stopped on a cut. Bruno, LaStarza, and ****ell were all the products of careful match making and never pulled off anything like Layne's best performances. They were built up and cashed out.
I need to see more of Layne first so for now I'm leaving him on the shelf. As for the rest, he'd beat them no problem. As mentioned, the guys who beat Bruno had world-class power. Matthews, Don C. and LaStarza did not. Bruno would maul these guys inside. Few remember how downright dirty Bruno could be inside. How many rabbit punches did he hit Tyson with? How many times did he hold & hit? Watch his fight with Pierre Coetzer...Bruno was viciously dirty when he wanted to be. I'm aware of Bruno's shortcomings, but those three just don't have the firepower, size or meanness to get the job done against Frank. No way.
Bruno could be as dirty as required I saw most of his fights from ringside he hit on the break, rabbit punched and held and hit . He beats Layne up with his jab and drops a right hand on his chin in the middle rounds to stop the flabby bellied Layne .
Dempsey complained about how physically weak Layne was... and that's by 1950's standards. That's not going to fare well if he tried to get dirty with a monster like Bruno... who was no slouch himself at fighting dirty.
Methinks old Mac, is on the wind up. FB had his limitations, but the 4 mentioned in this thread aren't those limitations. Good, solid, head jolting jabs from Frank until he drops the big right hand over the top, and goodnight all.
Dempsey said lot of things about Layne. Bruno was a monster in stature only and I have more trust in Layne's more proven successful dirty in-fighting than Bruno's.
