It was said on the Setanta broadcast last night that if he had a Povetkin as an opponent in his time he would be confident. Do you agree?
Yes, I think Bruno should be conident against Povetkin. I would expect Povetkin to win more rounds than Bruno, but Frank was far more powerful. Povetkin got hit enough times last night to make me think that a bigger hitter, like Bruno, would have sparked him.
Povetkin is very good and to some extent plays to the level of his opponent (which is why he sometimes seems very unimpressive) but Bruno's style is very wrong for Sasha. I think Povetkin specialises at outworking and out-thinking skilled boxers who don't have much power, but Bruno of course was one of the hardest hitting men who have ever lived. I think it would be pretty even for the first 3 rounds, before Bruno started landing too many big punches in sequence; the ref would have seen enough sometime in the middle rounds. Povetkin has never beaten the combination of size, strength, skill and power that Bruno would present. If Povetkin goes on to beat boxers with those attributes, though, I might change my mind on this one.
I find that unlikely, since the only person to get Frank behind on the scorecards was Mike Tyson, and that was because Bruno couldn't get off for fear of Tyson's combination of speed and power. Povetkin, of course, offers no such problem. On the other hand, EVERYONE else- Lewis, Bonecrusher, Terrible Tim, Coetzer, Bugner, Carl "The Truth" Williams etc. - found themselves behind on the cards before either Bruno stopped them or they stopped Bruno. Frank is an extremely underrated boxer in a technical sense: he could outjab anyone, had a variety of punches and was hard to hit considering how immobile he was. Sasha's best shot would be to tire Bruno out, but the best Bruno (1991-1993) was good at resting on the inside and pacing himself. In fact, by that point he was able to break tough opponents down for late stoppages (Coetzer) or dismantle difficult customers (Williams).
You're probably right. My thinking at the time when I said Povetkin would win more rounds was that he has better footwork and handspeed than Bruno so would be able to hit and move until Bruno walked him down. "Efective aggression" is one of Max Kellermans favourite phrases though and if, as is likely, Bruno controlled the center of the ring through his jab and power then signiicanty outlanding Bruno is probably the least Povetkin would have to do to impress the judges. Frank would probably land the more eective shots and take a lot of the rounds too. It would be an interesting clash of styles as long as it lasted but I reckon Bruno's power would win out by around the 8th or 9th round.
He would of beaten Povetkin, no doubt. Povetkin would probably win the majority of rounds, though Bruno would nick a few with his stiff jab, but eventually Bruno would knock him out. I don't think many fighters had the chin to sustain Bruno's right hand, he even had Oliver McCall in trouble, and I don't think Povetkin's chin is outstanding, very solid but not enough to shake off Bruno's punches. He has doesn't have the power to knock Bruno out, most will say Bruno had a bad chin but he didn't, he just had poor survival skills and couldn't find a way out of trouble. Povetkin has solid power but nothing more.
It would be like a man versus a boy. Too many physical advantages for Bruno and not enough of a skill gap to make it up for Sasha. Bruno stops him without a doubt.
