I'm going back to when Tyson was undisputed champion, and Gary Mason was an unbeaten domestic fighter. I think he held the British title? There was talk at that time of Gary Mason becoming an opponent for Tyson, but a report in the Daily Mirror said that a showdown with Frank Bruno was 'more likely.' The British public wanted this fight, but it didn't happen. If it had, it would have been an interesting one. I would have tipped Bruno to win, based on the fact that he'd had more experience fighting at world class level than Gary Mason. I think Bruno was a better boxer than Mason, and probably had enough power to knock him out. But remember that Mason also had dangerous power, and seemed to have a fairly solid chin, as I remember him taking some good shots off Lennox Lewis. And Lennox didn't knock him out at all. They just pulled Gary Mason out, because his eye was ****ed-up. So what do others think? Who do you think would have won, if these two had met in the ring, around about 1989/90?
Bruno. The reason it didn't happen was that both boxers had the same management (Terry Lawless). Mason was always quite happy playing second fiddle to Bruno in that gym which speaks volumns to me.
I seem to remember, after a Mason fight, someone saying to Terry Lawless; "you know what the public want, don't you? Bruno-Mason." Terry Lawless just laughed and walked off!
i remember at the time thinking why these two never fought, it would have been intriqing. i would have to go with bruno but mason had power and a good chin which would have made things interesting!!!!
There was also Derick Williams (Sweet D), he was rather like Sprott and never really got into the mix especailly after the French gypsy Chanet beat him twice
