Frank Bruno vs. George Foreman in 1991

Discussion in 'Classic Boxing Forum' started by KOTF, Jul 14, 2009.

  1. Frank Bruno was not a harder hitter than Ron Lyle. Old Foreman faced Alex Stewart,Gerry Cooney,Tommy Morrison,Moorer and Briggs who were all hard punchers.

Big Frank would put up a good show but would be stopped around the 8th by Big George.

What basis is there that Bruno was a bigger puncher than Stewart, Briggs or Cooney?

    Foreman by the 6th

Absolutely not. Speed kills Bruno, something Foreman never had, particularly in 1991.

Foreman of the 70s would of intimidated the Bomber, but in 91, Bruno would of been confident enough to compete with Foreman.

Bruno had a better jab, and would of used it all night, as Foreman got more and more frustrated. I do not doubt sooner or later George would of got home with one or two bombs, but I suspect Frank would of been able to get through them tricky moments, as Bruno would of been able to set the pace of the fight, and as shown against Bugner, when the Bomber does that, he does not have the stamina issues that cost him against Bonecrusher and Terrible Tim.

Bruno WU10, pretty comfortable, maybe even a shut out...

lets get one thing right, old foreman was not young foreman.

another thing what rated live heavyweight did foreman ever KO? Stewart no? former cruiser holyfeild no? morrison no? former LH micheal moorer yes.

How manny rated HW fighters did foreman want to fight who were within 15lb of his weight? none. No bowe, bruno, no lewis,no bonecusher, no rudduck, not even old man holmes. foreman by passed these types of rated heavyweights for a reason.

Frank Bruno was too much of a fighter for old george foreman who would have struggled to look as good against the fighters joe bugner beat like greg page, quick tillis and david bey who were active when forerman was picking fights agianst ken lakuster, big foot martin and getting a title shot out of beating terry andison.

old foreman traded on being an old name.. bald heads and burgers, he was capable but not a great fighter anymore.

And it took Foreman almost 12 rounds 2 KO Moorer .
Bruno hit harder than Moorer and was rangier which also means he will have easier time hitting Foreman than Moorer had and will land harder punches .
People will underestimate Bruno's stamina as usual , but how good was Morison's stamina ? how good was Briggs' ? and Bruno's stamina was sufficient to last 12 against Oliver McCall and win a decision .
Tim Witherspoon hit Bruno while he was down , and Bruno trusted the referee in England 2 do minimal justice , but d ref confused d fight with a (all) British boxing fight .
It is possible that somehow Foreman might have gotten 2 Bruno and stopped him , but d less possible possibility .
It is most possible , and fact it is what happened , that (old) Foreman didn't want to fight against Bruno .

Morrison, Cooney, Moorer, Cooper....George fought plenty of guys who could punch. I just think Bruno would be intimidated by Foreman, whereas George would be unflappable. And I think his jab alone would discourage the hell out of Frank.

But don't get me wrong, it's an interesting and competitive fight.

    firstly george lost to morrison.

cooney had not beat a rated fighter since 9 years earlier.

cooper still a cruiser, was on a losing streak.

foreman was mentally tough but why did he bypass so many live, rated big heavyweights who wanted to win?

Obviously foreman could bomb out bruno. But im choosing bruno to box
smart and even shake up George. Always was impressed how bruno looks
Against lewis even though this matchup is 91. Bruno getting hurt in the twelfth
    round winning 116 to 112
