Bruno would dominate him with the jab. If Quarry were black nowhere would rate him or care about it much. Bruno's wins over McCall, Coetzee, Coetzer, Williams, Ribalta, Fergesun are as good as anything Quarry managed. They were nowhere near Like Chuvalo, Machen and Ellis?
Mac's jab at his best was the equal of Bruno's but he threw it faster and more often then Frank, its what kept Jerry on the outside until he saw the opening and fired, much as he did against Shavers. Most long time boxing fans would not say Lyle and Shavers were not in the same caliber as Bruno and I think most would pick either to beat him, I would. Throwing out the Norton go where Jerry was as shot as Ali was against Holmes, he still was outboxed by Machen and Ellis, Frank however never approached boxing skills as those two did. The off Quarry struggled with the likes of Tony Doyle, the on Quarry easily ko'd the same Doyle in 2. An on Quarry here makes this a carbon copy of the Foster ko if not earlier. As far as the "if Quarry was black" comment, your speaking of yourself alone, I wouldn't see it that way and none of the other long time fans I know would either.
I was a big fan of Frank's back in the day, you have to remember the times, we Brits were absolutely desperate for a heavyweight champion and we invested a lot of hope, emotion and money into him. He looked the part, with the Nortonesque physique, highlight reel knockouts of carefully selected lower level opposition, but the flaws soon showed. Bruno was not as good as he looked. Decades on, Frank is still being over-rated because he looks the part, Big muscles seem to impress some fans, but boxing is not just about musculature. Frank was largely kept away from prime elite competition unless a title was at stake. Elite was Tyson, Lewis, not the McCall, Coetzee, Coetzer, Williams or Ribalta that Frank beat. There is no way that Duff, LOawless etc would let Frank anywhere near the Quarry that beat Lyle, Shavers or Foster unless there was a title at stake - they would not take the risk as deep down they did not trust that Bruno's flaws would not be exposed. Peak Quarry would beat Bruno, he wouldn't be facing the likes of Ali or Frazier here, he would evade enough of Bruno's ponderous jabs for long enough to draw the sting from Frank's work, let Bruni use up too much nervous energy and stop him in about 9 rounds.
The Chuvalo fight was a fluke...I guarantee you he would have defeated George in a rematch by fighting smarter...Machen beat an extremely green Quarry, and I'm sure we can agree that Jerry wasn't at his best vs Ellis....that later subsequent versions of Quarry, especially under the tutelage of Gil Clancy was superior to the version that fought Jimmy. Having said that, there is still the possibility that Ellis could have turned the trick again, this being purely a matter of styles...and a style that Frank Bruno did not possess. Ellis was superior to Bruno...and that would make for an interesting thread of it's own.
Personally I feel Quarry when on top of his game would out box Bruno handily and possibly stop him in the mid to late rounds.
:think I always remember a Boxing Monthly report on McCall/The Buisnessman, where to paraphrase: McCall looked as bad as anyone could winning in a round. We now know this was Oliver in the very best period of his career. So is McCall elite? That is Atomic ... As for the fight in question, size will be an issue, but I do not see Bruno blasting out Quarry, and the moment round five comes Jerry will start to come into it; eventually winning a decision/late stoppage, probably dependent on the scheduled distance.
Lyle was nowhere near Bruno? I'd disagree with that. Lyle was a very capable contender and came close to snatching the HW crown. He'd have a very solid chance to beat Bruno himself I think Quarry's stamina and his own boxing skills would come into play here. Early on Bruno gets the better of Quarry, but as the fight goes on, Quarry would eventually get to Bruno and stop him late. I've seen you underrate Quarry before, PP. You don't really give him any credit and I've also seen you say David Haye knocks him out.
Only pause for thought on this one is, would big Frank manage to last as long with Quarry, as his compatriot Jack Bodell did!
Quarry would get rid of the static and stiff Bruno early.Bruno had no natural instincts or reflexes when hit. Quarry on the other hand did well against elite bangers, Lyle Shavers and Mac Foster. The American would double up on his left hook under Brunos predictable straight right, to his body and head. Quarry ko3 Bruno
