I still get the impression the average man on the street is more likely to know Frank Bruno judging by the way boxing has gone. Maybe I'm wrong.
Non boxing fans will know who Bruno is where they might not Hatton.Brunos health problems for one and the revival of 'It's a knockout' are two possible reasons?
Frank is a lot more popular with the older generation, whilst Ricky is more popular with the newer generation (teenagers, young adults etc.). Overall, I feel Frank is more popular.
well, the best way to compare them is both at their hight of fame, no one comes close to Bruno in terms of popularity, he was at one time the most beloved sportsman in the country. hatton is handicapped by the times, back in franks day boxing was huge, he has the edge because he was a heavyweight taking on the likes of tyson and lewis which ain't the same as fighting KT and mayweather although they were big events, frank also had the advantage of terestrial TV, its really remarkable that hatton is so big without so much as having thrown a punch on terestrial tv. all things consided its Bruno hands down, most of the casuals know bruno more then hatton even though he hasn't been in the spotlight for years
I'd say Bruno.... On reflection, more people like Hatton than Bruno, but on the flipside I'd say he has more haters. A few of my mates aren't keen on him, for reasons other than his boxing career and the fact that he is from Manchester. I honestly cannot think of anyone that has a dislike for Bruno.
I've met Bruno a few times (If you live in Essex most people have) and once he gave me a signed photo of him wearing the WBC belt. Just the WBC belt. Nothing else. It's one of the gayest things i've ever seen. I can only put it down to his insanity around that time.
Bruno, hands down. the whole country seemed to get behind frank when he fought, and he was pretty much loved by everyone. look at the public reaction when his mental health problems came to light. when hatton ends up on his arse will anyone really care?
Bruno was from an era when boxing was more a mainstream sport, so was probably more recognisable to the average man on the street than Hatton is, but Hatton would be my pick, he's drawn bigger crowds than Bruno and his best Sky Box office performance almost doubled Brunos' best. This despite coming up in an era when boxing was consigned to sky sports with a fraction of the regular audience it had when Bruno came up, and fighting in a much less glamorous division, would Bruno have had such a high profile if he hadn't been a heavyweight do you think?
Bruno was popular when boxing was a more mainstream sport, and therefore he was beloved by more people. Hatton is very popular in an era where boxing is a niche sport, so while there might be some name recognition amongst the general public, not all those who are vaugely familar with him, will love him.
