nah there is no chance of Jones dancing to a decision, you need to be a big HW with a big punch to beat Bruno. Bruno is knocking anyone else the **** out, he was a huge, athletic guy with serious KO power, that was outboxing and seriously rocked Tyson. It also took brutal poundings from both huge punchers Tyson and Lewis to stop him. A man Jones' size is getting put into orbit, make no mistake about it, Bruno was a monster.
Bruno was actually a good boxer with an educated jab. With his size and long arms, he could have easily outboxed RJJ, but he most like would have ko'd Roy.
Okay, I think this is the worst I've seen Jones underrated. Jones isn't going to automatically crumble because his chin, confidence, and legs fell apart in his late thirties, nor am I even convinced that Bruno was a better class of heavyweight than Ruiz. Bruno did have a jab, but he wasn't exceptionally fast or awkward. He didn't bum rush fighters either. I don't think he had enough to catch up to Jones. Jones by decision.
bruno?? most of you are talking like he was a great fighter. bruno at his best was a good fighter, jones was an all-time great. jones wins in a shutout.
Here's the thing, Bruno is not this ATG fighter and I certainly hate it when Jones gets underrated. Check my post history I always pull for Jones when I feel that he is being undermined because his talent is probably among the best the sport has ever seen. As for this fight, Bruno was a better fighter than Ruiz IMO. To beat Bruno you need power and aggression. Mike Tyson had it in spades which is why he beat him twice, Lennox Lewis turned the fight around the moment he started stepping up his offense and stopped him while he was behind on the cards, Bonecrusher caught Frank with a big punch in a fight Bruno was winning handily and of course the Witherspoon fight which was pretty close before Tim edged him late. Jones is clearly more talented, but realistically the guy who should win on paper doesn't always get the job done. There was a thread earlier which talked about punchers who beat fighters who were far more skilled. Jones has the ability to use his ring generalship, incredible speed and superior stamina to beat Bruno; but Bruno was a big puncher. I'm not saying Jones had a bad chin because I actually think it was pretty good but I am saying that Bruno had elite level power and therefore I'd favor a Bruno KO as the most likely outcome.
Ruiz wasnt either and he still managed to land a pretty good shot on Jones. If Bruno landed the same shot, which I believe he would, it would be all over for Jones. I dont think Jones could have beaten any realy legit heavyweight except for Ruiz and maybe Byrd. Any bigger more skilled punching threat, bombs him out. He was just too small. He was a small LH. At heavyweight he looked like he was wearing football shoulder pads, on his skinny legs and frame.
Jones was NOT an ATG Heavyweight -He was an ATG at other weights. Bruno wasnt brilliant but he proved enough in the HW division that he would beat someone who fought at the weight once
It'd be intriguing to see how Bruno reacted to a couple of rounds of chasing shadows. Amiable as he often was, I wouldn't be surprised to see him foul out out of frustration.
I concur with this. I'd give Bruno about a 70/30 shot of stopping Jones. Frank,for all his limitations,would have been a more formidable opponent than John Ruiz.
Matching him up with smallish HWs like Dempsey, Patterson or Walcott is far different from matching him up with a legit modern HW with the physical tools of a Frank Bruno. I really can't see any outcome but a Bruno KO.
