Staging this hypothetical fight at any stage in the 90`s who would win? Keeping in mind Bruno had a breakdown in the late 90`s, and that Roy could have moved up to heavyweight while Frank was champ. Who would win this bout in the 90`s?
Frank Bruno fr me. Maybe lose the first few round but Bruno jab and superior strength puts him ahead. Bruno bullys and batters Jones into submission in 7.
RJJ was amazing in the 90’s and I mean that literally. Bruno has to be favoured on sheer size but Jones is a live dog here. If Frank doesn’t get him out of there I could see Jones dazzling the glacial slow by comparison Bruno for a UD or late stoppage. You have to favour the bigger man but Roy was really, really special in that decade. Better than the version that schooled Ruiz in 2003 imo. Interesting match up actually.
I can't actually call this one. Roys speed would give him a huge advantage and he would probably just have enough pop to keep big Frank honest. The thing is the size difference is huge and Bruno had legit power - and a good jab.. Real hard one to call i usual lean towards the bigger guy in these match ups but Roy was special
I don’t remember much of Roy I haven’t seen him in so long- but from what I remember he hasn’t got the pop to hurt Bruno or the chin to survive at HW.
Bruno is much bigger, 100 time stronger, hit a lot harder. Though Jones with his much greater speed makes this a very tough fight, all Bruno would need is one punch...and it would be over. Bruno KO
Think Roy of the Ruiz fight was to good for him tbh. Def could be wrong because of his limited hw resume. We know he was capable of beating championship level contender HWs.
Great question @mark ant RJJ has a chance against everybody It's fair to say he chose Ruiz for a reason.... Bruno's physicality makes me worrisome to believe Roy would win.
I see it another way, Jones UD with Bruno being a live underdog because of his size/power. I wouldn't be shocked if Jones dropped Bruno either. Jones was special.
Roy has no chin for Christ sake. He took the one fight he knew he could win. He admitted himself that. He would not do well at heavyweight
Bruno was big and hit like a truck but he was not a mindless slugger. In fact be often threw very straight punches and had a fairly upright and text book style. Skilled as Roy was, that gigantic jab delivered from Bruno's very long arms would be a huge problem. And although Bruno had a suspect chin, I really don't see Roy being able to drop him let alone KO him. This would be a very frustrating fight for both men since Bruno was so stiff and lacks the speed and timing to catch Roy but Roy would be annoyed by the size difference and needing to be alert every second of every round due to Bruno's numbing power. I think it's quite possible Bruno takes an ugly lopsided decision with very few power punches landed from either guy since they'd be so wary of each other. Might resemble the Haye vs Wladmir fight.
