People in this thread are a joke. Bruno by KO. He was a MUCH better fighter than Briggs. I dunno why this is even a debate.
The best performance Briggs ever gave was the last two rounds against Lyakhovic. Bruno out boxed McCall in a victory Briggs never came close to achieving in his career.
Both were big punching guys but Bruno was more disciplined and had a excellent hard jab .I think frank sticks Briggs on the end of that jab before knocking him out in a brutal but brilliant fight.
Bruno. It might be a tough skrap for a few rounds but Frank ultimately drops the bomb against someone who has worse stamina than himself.
I think that early handspeed of Shannon's gets the job done. Frank is going to be walking in and looking to establish right at the beginning of round 1. I think the handspeed of Briggs catches him & clips him with a right hand over the ear. And we all know Frank's survival skills. He'd better not get tagged by this guy and have 90 seconds to kill. Real real nice matchup though and such a dangerous fight for both guys. That's why so many of these potential tough matches were never made---loser falls down the ladder too much. Easier to fight a non threatening opponent.
Exactly. Briggs has never done anything, against rated men, ever. The gift against Foreman, the 1st round against Lewis, the draw with Botha and the last second win over Liakhovich are the ONLY positive bits of light in Shannon's career. I give him credit for looking like the greatest heavyweight who ever lived, but a comic book character doesn't do anything for me. I actually like the guy and keep rooting for him at this stage of his career.
I was at that fight. For 10 rounds, Briggs was shut out. I left after the 10th round to beat the traffic, thinking it was an easy decision win for Sergei. I was greatly surprised when I picked up the paper the next morning and discovered Briggs won.
It's not unreasonable to favor Bruno and I'm leaning towards him too. But there are no sure things in a matchup like this. You have two big punchers with questionable durability. Bruno probably has the edge in skill which is why I can appreciate an argument in his favor. That and he was never beaten but some of the mediocrities who beat Shannon. But he also managed to get knocked out by a 13 fight Smith in the late rounds of a fight that he was otherwise winning. Briggs was an even bigger man and had power that was comparable or greater. I stand by my earlier comment that this is a 50/50 fight. Or if it makes someone feel better then 60/40 in favor of Bruno. Still hardly a given..
Poor Frank loses in this one imo . Shades of the Bruno /Smith fight ,Big Frank ramming that jab out , keeping Briggs back for much of the fight .It looks like a sure win for Frank , but he'll get fatigued and Briggs goes hyper , throwing everything at him . A dazed Bruno stops punching back and the ref dives in . Briggs w rsf 10 Bruno .
This would be interesting. I've seen Shannon take monster shots and keep coming, seemed to me he would fall mostly due to accumulations. I think Briggs might outlast Bruno.
