Hello guys, I came across some old Bruno fights the other day and I was wondering a few questions about him. The last I heard of Bruno was he was not doing to well, as this was a few years ago. I remember hearing he was going through a nasty divorce, his longtime trainer committed suicide, he gained alot of weight, and even heard about drug rumors/severe depression. As I was watching these tapes, I couldn't help but wonder if the Brit legend was doing ok these days as I have not heard any recent news on him. It's always a shame that prize fighters the majority of the time hit rock bottom years after their prime. I'm from Alabama so as far as Brit boxers go I could care less, but I always admired Bruno's heart and toughness. He was a great heavy with a good punch that was always in the fight win, lose, or draw. So I was wondering, as I know there are many knowledgeable guys around here, how Frank is doing or has anyone seen him recently?
read frank bruno's book, fighting back i think its called, its a cracking read. It will answer most of your questions, i dont know about him going fat, he did lose alot and went really skinny but at the time he wrote his book he had put back on some weight. he dabbled with cocaine at one point which he talks about in his book and yes went through a divorce with his wife, mentions about the guy committing suicide as well.
Bruno had Tyson beat through 3 - 4 rounds until he decided to slug with Mike at close quarters in their February 1989 showdown for the Heavyweight Title. If he had stuck to his original fight plan he would have become HW Champ of the world that night.
been a while since i saw that fight, but i'm pretty sure bruno wasn't shutting out tyson early though he may have had a points lead. tyson at that time forced you to trade bombs with him so it was only a matter of time before bruno was put to sleep. even buster was forced to trade with tyson and mix it up the only difference is that bruno faced a better tyson and that buster had a great chin and put on a great performance that i don't think bruno could match. that said, hope bruno is doing ok
Buster's chin did not look great against Holyfield and before the Tyson fight I think he got stopped by a mediocre fighter.
it doesn't mater. i said buster fought a lesser version and showed a good chin that night (b/c tyson landed one huge shot and some other hard shots here and there) and that's why he was able to get the w, but bruno wasn't gonna win his tyson fight. tyson was in better form and there was no way bruno was gonna avoid "mixing it up" like the above poster said. by the way, it wasn't just buster's 'chin' that didn't look great vs holyfield. that's the enigma of buster douglas who looked top notch in a couple of other fights (at least in spurts) apart from the tyson fight than could look pretty bad in others
Last time I saw him in the papers he was ofering to try and help another sportsman who had similar problems (Paul Gascoigne, a football player,) suggesting he's a bit better. I hope so anyway, he was one of my favourite ighters as a kid, not so much for his boxing style he just seemed like a nice guy.
