Bruno was a huge puncher, no doubt about it.

Don King or no Don King ask yourself this:

If Frank Bruno had hit as hard as Chris Byrd but had otherwise been the same how far would he have gone?

If the answer is not verry then you have your answer.

Bruno could box as well, it's another attribute that is forgotten.

Obviously being able to hit like a truck helps :yep

Where would Brunorate in the pantheon of great British fighters. Based on opposition/performance/ability ranking system (I.e a fair one) I reckon he'd be between 30-40. He lost most of the big ones, but performed well in them, earning credit towards his standing IMO. I also think his outpointong of McCall was decent, albeit with Frank blowig out of his arse at the end

Have you done a British list?

It's not something I've ever really contemplated, I've done the odd division by division list though.

I'd rank Bruno a lot higher than most would - usually I would rate people on who they have actually beaten, but Bruno's slate doesn't really reflect how good he was.... it's his losses that define him rather than his wins.

    Schooling Smith before getting nailed
    Fading against Witherspoon
Almost sparking Tyson before being KO'd
Schooling Lewis before getting slammed and stopped
Not fancying the job against Tyson in the return

    vs

Wins over the likes of Ferguson, McCall, Ribalta, Coetzee, Cummings, Eklund etc etc.

He isn't all that inferior (if at all) to someone like Ricky Hatton, and not far behind the likes of Hamed, Calzaghe, Benn and Eubank.

I agree that losses can help a fighters legacy if the effort given/application of skillset is enough that is shows how good the fighter is, even in a losing effort.

I.e the whole 'Hatton only lost to the top 2 p4p' is utterly redundant as he was thoroughly outclassed in both.

Pat Cowdell giving Sal Sanchez a difficult fight on the other hand, would enhance his reputation, as would Alan Rudkins efforts against the cream of the Bantamweight crop.

Wasn't that king and Lewis?? Bruno would have never won a title had it not been for King giving him shots one and three. I'm not downplaying Bruno I was just making a joke since he got three title shots for being so popular.

You only have to see Bruno smash Gerrie Coetzee in one round to know that he could punch.
