He had good power. He rocked Lewis. The main problem was he wasn't very fast in terms of hand speed. Coetzee was shot, but still he stopped him with one punch. Bruno's biggest weaknesses were a lack of defense and hand speed. He could hit. But he couldn't ko very good fighters because he lacked the handspeed to finish off a hurt fighter.
For years there were rumours about a punch test between Bob Fitzsimmons, Jim Jeffries and Sam McVea, which many saw as an old wives tale of boxing. It was eventually verified when Adam Pollack found a primary source detailing it when researching his first biography of Jack Johnson. I have tried to verify the Bruno punch test myself without success, but it still keeps cropping up from time to time, so I think there is something behind it. The test that only involved Bruno himself I have.
problem was he wasn't a natural puncher, too mechanical. He fought bravely but was being eaten alive by Tyson even though he landed that punch, he needed at least three more like that to actually hurt Tyson, which he just didn't have the ability to do. I loved his effort against Lewis but you could see where it was going, that big punch he rocked Lewis with didn't even seem flush. Lennox still doesn't really give Bruno much credit for that fight, I heard him in some interview a while ago saying he was cold or some rubbish, Frank was just fired up. anyway off subject but got some great memories of watching Bruno as a kid. One thing about Bruno was he had natural power.
I think he might have hit as hard as anybody personally. Smith and Witherspoon were durable heavys in their primes and the Smith fight in particular was more of a jab fest on Bruno's part rather than him going after Bonecrusher and trying to land anything huge.
Misleading He knocked out all but 2 of the guys he beat. Several fighers Kod him. Smith, Lewis, Witherspoon, Tyson (twice).
