There's no greater loss of face in the boxing ring than giving up your back.

I've seen guys who are considered the stud in their gym - and undefeated in the pros! - torn apart with verbal lambasting by coaches and even their own entourages for doing it during sparring...and living it down takes a long time.

So bad enough to be shut out (or nearly enough, on my card) and stopped by a guy you were supposed to be fed in a showcase in your first main event - but that is probably the worst part. The dagger twist.

I was as surprised as you were when tough as nails Welliver gave up his back to Browne. :huh

I've seen coaches literally dump fighters over it, and call them every name in the book.

Unless you are fresh off the street, a complete novice, most gym people consider it the biggest no-no there is, totally unacceptable.

Clinch. Run. Take a knee. Throw a low blow. Whatever. Don't ever give an opponent your back. Most un-macho thing you can do. (not to mention a stupid, amateurish tactical mistake - as most refs feel the same way and won't harshly penalize a fighter if he runs up and bashes you across the back of the head when you do it...meaning you could be subjecting yourself to not just a loss but serious brain damage)

Makes sense.... Essentially quiting is what it is.... Taking a knee, can be tactical and a breather. Low blow, heatbutt? Dirty sure, but not quitting.... When you turn your back you're basically ASKING the ref to stop the fight, and anything that comes your way is your fault.

It comes down to base human instincts that define who you are, what you're made of. Fight or flight. Turning around is the ultimate act of submission - basically your personal declaration of "I am not a fighter".

Newbies & children entering a gym for the first time are usually given a pass on it, but told after they learn a bit of technique not to keep it up if they want anybody's respect (or further assistance).

    :deal

Hell, as a kid.... Fought guys twice my size. Got my face pounded in. But never quit, never turned my back. You don't do that. Kill or be killed......... Turning your back, essentially suicide. Just picture turning your back in REAL warfare.

The kid on the undercard Pettis is with TMT.

    Not sure who promoted Hurd.

Surprised he beat Galarza, must be pretty decent!

He didn't just beat him. He outclassed him.

Good, fast feet. Quick hands with some pop. (Although he cuffed a lil bit with his shots) Good bodywork from the start. Good defensive posture, but able to open up very quickly with hard combos, and get right back into it. Can't base TOO much on 1 fight, but there was a lot to like.

Yeah, Id never seen Hurd but I had seen Galarza and thought he was a bit of a sleeper at 154lbs.

Be interesting to see where Hurd goes from here. Theres a lot of young undefeated fighters and 154 who can match up nicely against each other
