Has he? The first fight should be irrelevant now... Plus I remember watching a very very close fight the last time they fought; I had it a draw or Degale by a round.

Time will tell but I believe Degale will be the better fighter and the bigger money maker.

Yup your right, he should have been able to deal with it with his amateur pedigree. But the fact remains, Groves was brilliant on the night, and Degale was rubbish, and it was still incredibly close.

But I'll concede, as it stands now Groves has to be considered the better fighter. Even tho I think Degale beats him if they fight again.

 

I don't really buy that. Even having a "bad night", good fighters should be able to pull out the win. I don't believe that DeGale failed to do something, I think Groves forced him not to.

He controlled distance, he used his jab, landed his shots and stood off again. DeGale did not, largely following Groves around. That round where DeGale just stood still sums it up. Groves made him do the work and he couldn't, because he knew when he tried to step in he'd get drilled with the jab.

I believe Groves is going to grow from that, since he looks keen to develop and address his flaws. DeGale is going to be the same whatever, IMO.

 

Dont forget mate, the lad has only had 10 fights as a pro (which is very different to the Ams). What would happen if Degale worked Groves' tactics out early? Would he giner kid be able to adopt without a plan B from his corner?

We will learn alot about Degale in the Pole fight. I hope he doesnt keep going on about him being robbed. It was a close fight, and i wouldnt argue with a point swing either way

 

I'm not forgetting it either. I think DeGale has been developed badly and he's a novice, but so has Groves.

People think Groves was just being negative but he out-threw and out-landed James. He mixed it up when he had to and, really, I couldn't give DeGale rounds for landing on arms.

I think DeGale lacks the intelligence to win at the highest level, so he needs a good trainer to carry him a bit there. What Groves was doing was nothing remarkable, but neither DeGale nor his trainer spotted it.

Little subtle things like stepping in with the jab, then to the side, then another jab or a right. And it completely confused DeGale.

 

DeGale wasn't technically able to close the gap, cut the ring, step in with a double jab or set up a right hand. Basic stuff at professional level. He didn't use the early rounds he gave away to find his range and timing properly for later on because he didn't know how to.

 

I'd like Groves to work on his stamina, his legs looked ****ed after eight or nine rounds - it's the biggest weakness he has, now he's developed the little half step to force the opponent to lunge in a little bit.

For me his bodywork was impressive, it's probably his best punch actually ahead of the chopping right over the top.

DeGale didn't work the body nearly enough - it's not exactly a secret that Groves has iffy stamina, if he'd been able to slow him down he'd have had a more static target that he prefers.

He was made to miss a hell of a lot with headshots, he needs someone to get him jabbing to the body and lowering the straight shots to the chest if the opponent is slippery.

Groves' performance was pretty basic, apart from his legs being gone he showed plenty that would encourage me, though I have reservations about The Dark Lord and his ''stealing decisions'' tactics - it's gonna bite him on the arse one day.

 

It was clear as day that DeGale should've threw a double hook to the body to set up the right hand.

 

He just didn't possess the technical skill to get in position...

Why Matchroom? They ve managed to poach fighters that Hennessy built up but they've still got loads to prove as to what they do with them. I love the way Eddie Hearn comes across as a real fight fan but there's a very real possibility his 2 major stars will lose world title fights in the next 2 months.

 

Theres no 'reason' for why Groves has beaten DeGale except for the fact the judges on both occasions gave it to him. Looking for some underlying reason besides the fact the judges decided in Groves' favor in two very close fights is stretching the issue in the extreme. I don't think George Groves won either fight, he's an extremely fortunate young man.

 

No shock really, Wallet summed the situation up. Groves is using VVarren and VVarren using Groves. Both know it's a good deal between them.

 

I concur, The fights were close and Groves got the nod. Another set of judges may of went for DeGale.
