I believe he was a colonel. That's pretty well paid in this country but in the old communist Soviet Union you were supposed to be doing it for the state not you own pockets so I doubt they were particularily loaded. Then when the USSR broke up alot of the smaller countries had trouble paying their military at all and they started selling their guns to African warlords to make up for it. Quality of life in eastern europes generally lower across the board, I saw some program with a guy travelling around Russia meeting people, what are considered middle class families are still living in flat shares in places like Moscow, 4 families on a floor with a shared kitchen and bathroom, that's for students here.
