Why does he make his fighers have so many fights before fighting for a world title ?,going of wikapedia and only got into boxing the past few years so i might have got it wrong, Ricky Hatton didn't have a world title fight untill his 39th fight which if unbeaten surley makes no sense. ( or is this something to do with lack of amature experience )
Hatton "wasted" something like 10-12 fights defending the Mickey Mouse WBU title, he also turned pro at quite a young age which adds fights.
Well, you are being sarcastic, but if you can coin in £.5m a fight as Hatton was, you'd be crazy not to get 8-10 of them in the bank before mixing it with the big dogs. You can knock Warren's approach but a lot of his guys have made really, really good money with him.
I think it helps a lot of British fighters, it helps them get on the job training, maintains their confidence levels, not that I agree with it. I mean if you have a degree of ability, get babied along fighting smaller, tailor made opponents, and you do that for long enough, your abilities in the ring are more than likely going to improve, not that im aiming that at anyone specifically. Im not one for nationalistic pride in Boxing, so for me it seems a bit strange that the fans, get on Warren's case, if anything, his match making is big part of why Britain has produced as many world champs as they have, I mean if these guys got fed to the dogs earlier, that might have been eaten, that is where that on the job training comes in imo.
Would Lockett and Jennings have even got a world title shot and big purse if they werent with Warren? Anyway, sure he held Hatton back but then he became bigger by beating the man in the division at the right time. Warren had Calzaghe a world title shot in 22 or 23, Naz in his 20th, Cleverley will get a shot early, as will Brook. Alex Arthur would have fought for a world title inside 20 fghts but for Gomez. Still picked up an interim strap in 26. Nicky Cook never would have got a world title if he was with a different promoter. Ricky Burns got his shot early and took his chance. Compare that to someone like Jamie Moore who was around in a fairly weak 154 division with some very beatable champions but Maloney wouldnt splash the cash to land him a world title fight
I was going to say the same thing Tommy. Warren did well with Lockett, Jennings and to a slightly lesser extent Mitchell have done well just to get them title shots let alone winning them.
Warren is a pain in the arse for us fans who want to see good fights and good domestic fighters tested against quality opposistion but there is no denying the fact that he has made many a British fighter rich and has led them to a world title (albeit along the path of least resistance many times). My problem with Warren is that often his fighters have 20-30 fights slowly (to slowly for my liking) increasing the level of competition until they get to domestic/Euro level. This gives his fighters a lot of experience and a lot of pay days (good pay days if they remain undefeated and build up a decent fan base) and slowly moves them up the rankings (usually the WBO). The fighter will then get an eliminator or even a straight crack at a title. Now from a business point of view this is a pretty decent business plan. The fighter has a good record (more marketable), has made some good money and now has a shot of a world title. However the chances of the fighter winning the title, or winning it and holding on to it by facing world class opposition is not very high. All to often when a Warren fighter fights for a title (or wins a vacant title against a weak fighter but then has to defend against a world class opperator) i kind of feel that the Warren fighter is getting thrown to the wolves because despite his 20-30 fights he has often not fought any fighters who you could consider world class or even fringe contenders.
:good Not sure why Moore stuck with Maloney for so long. He didn't help himself losing fights at the wrong time.... made it easier for people to steer clear of him.
Great post. You just said what I thought, but could not put into words, the whole post is spot on :thumbsup
I think Warren fighters move at a fast pace than other UK promoters. Nathan Cleverly - 20 fights Kell Brook - 22 there next fights will be world titles. how many fights has John Murray had?
