Frank Warren not happy with Dave Coldwell

Dave Coldwell was asked a question - He answered it honestly? - No problems there !

Frank Warren took a slight offence to the answer, made his views on the said article, yet didn't ask for it to be taken down ? No problems there !

I don't see why (a.) Boxing news felt they had to take the whole article OR Warrens comments down, (b.) people are getting so worked up over Warren on here.....

(A) Depriving your target audience of a good article and also a good bit of 'needle' for the fans to enjoy
(B) Warren never asked for it to be taken down (as stated by DB himself) so whats the problem?

No wonder this sport is going down the shitter.

Their childish spats with leading promoters and refusing to report on said promoters shows don't help :deal

 

Said promoter's refusal to give them decent seats doesn't help either.

 

That was over a year ago! This topic is getting blown way out of proportion. You wouldn't get this on Boxrec

 

Boxrec is a good forum but does seem a bit like a gentleman's club sometimes.

This place used to be a bit like that when I first started here.

 

1. Warren has what is probably the most widely read media text on boxing in Britain via his Sun column and has occasionally used it in the past to be critical of others. I've never known anyone have a right to reply in it.

2. Warren shouldn't have been allowed a right of reply in what was effectively somebody else's opinion column, IMO.

3. BN's decision has been made, presumably, for totally pragmatic reasons. Anyone who has been there will know exactly what I mean.

4. In my opinion, in the light of this, BN should seriously consider their future stance in their coverage of this promoter. I don't think they will, however. And I understand why, too.

 

If Coldwell if the the man i think he is he will tell them to stick there article up there arse.

seriously if Steve Woods from VP Promotions pulled this stunt wtf would happen?

 

I obviously hope Dave doesn't do that but if he did who would come out of all this happier? Not us or Dave I know that much.

I'm joking, I buy it from the newsagent. Interesting thread chaps, good stuff. I didn't read the article before it was taken down, so I have nothing!

 

the truth is Boxing News no longer represent the view of the fans. They need the promoters to much and the promoters no longer need them so theres a fear of being critical of people like Warren.

The fact they supported Haye vs Harrison and failed to criticise Haye after the fight and question him or Booth for there ducking of Klitscko says allot.

 

Interesting post Rob but I think you'd be surprised how much the promoters do need the likes of BN, especially for the smaller shows. They still take out full page ads after all.

It does leave me a little uneasy how uncritical BN are though. Having said that, my early days as a boxing fan were during the great Harry Mullan's reign as BN ed, and he was never afraid to tear anyone a new one, no matter how powerful they were.

In these litigous days, those times are long gone unfortunately.

 

You're entitled to your opinion but a lack of criticism should not be misconstrued as support. As for promoters boxing is not in such rude health that they do not need all the publicity they can get. We have criticised all the major Sky promoters at some point over the last 12 months yet all four plus Hennessy Sports continue to advertise with us. We need them in the sense that if they all banned us from their shows tomorrow we'd lose on average 10 pages per week and plenty of readers but despite being encouraged to show honesty and courage in our writing this has only happened once in the last few years and even then they really only banned one particular writer. We have little to fear, that's not bravado it's evidence-based logic.

 

Encouraging to hear you say that, but to these eyes at least it isn't reflected in the pages. Part of being a fan of boxing is to love/hate highlighting the nonsense which goes on (whether mismatches, alphabet soup, bad ref/judging, ripped off fighters) and i just don't see that reflected in BN at all.

All opinions, and I've said a number of times that BN has come on leaps and bounds, but this is my view anyway
