Frankie Gavin has pulled out because he cant make the weight. what does this mean for the GB squad and why the hell did they not make sure he would be ready
I means a virtual lock for a medal, and a good shot at the gold, is now up in smoke because he couldn't resist the Danny Williams Diet. Terrible news...hope the rest of the boxing squad don't get demoralized from it.
to be fair hes not done a danny williams his team have had him fighting at the weight class above for a while now. Apprently trouble making the lower weight has proved difficult, y they didnt realise this earlier is a bit dense. I was looking 4ward to seeing him fight he must be gutted. His earning potential takes a massive dent now tho. Any kind of olympic medal can be used to generate hype Then again maybe it wil take the pressure of him a little
Danny Williams diet? He has been training like a pro apparently, this has resulted in him growing. He could make the weight for his first fight they reckon, but making the weight for the later fights would probably have adverse effects. Shame though.
Pretty disapointing for GB. I dont think everyone fully appreciate what these guys go through just to lose those last few hundred grams.
At least he's already received acclaim on the amateur stage, and shouldn't have any trouble getting a pro contract, hopefully w/out Frank Warren.
Yeah i just heard, man im totally devistated though not as devistated as Frankie will be. This hurts a lot.
He has been in the gym too much, too many weights and he has put on too much muscle. If it were a bit of flab he would have burnt that off within the last 2 weeks easily. But you cannot strip off muscle weight like that. However the whole situation is ridiculous and I blame the GB set up. He won his last tournament at light welter, so either have him go for that spot in the Olympics or have absolutely everything in place to keep him at lightweight and make sure he does not pack on muslcle gain. I cannot believe this to be honest. He has beaten everyone in his weight class and comfortably beat Tishenko the Russian who had not lost for 3 years. He was almost a dead cert for a medal and a very very good shot for gold
I stand corrected, I'm sure you'll understand though as I feel like kicking walls at the moment. I was seriously looking forward to watching him fight in the Olympics and hoping for a gold, now that's all gone for good.
Me too fella! Almost dropped my shreddies this morning when I found out! haha! I agree with the above posts - why the hell was he campaigning at light welter in his last tournament, so close to the games. I bet the poor lads in bits, he should turn pro now, he's already proven himself in the ameteurs.
There seems to be a recurring pattern with the British when it comes to discipline and professionalism in sports. This is especially so with the English who have a knack of letting go when they need to maintain. Hatton, Williams, Gazza... the list goes on. To fail the weight before the biggest athletic event on the planet is a shame, and only conveys to the rest of the world how dire the boxing prospects are in Britain.
rustyj - people just aren't educated enough on this sort of thing, they are behind the rest of the world I would think. He doesn't have to hit the weights, he doesn't have to eat more and gain muscle. Again, making him compete at a lower weight than he physically can is ****.
