Frankie Gavin to fight Jason Welborn in Jan

That was my thought when the fight was first announced.

So much for stepping him up.

I don't think the board should have allowed this for the title.

If Oscar is coming over here next year, Frankie should have a word with him! What's Frankie's contract like? Many fights left with Wazza?

I'm telling you, Frankie will retire by the end of next year. He isn't cut out for the pro game.

 

Shocking fight. would have liked to see Gavin/Matthew Hatton.

 

Frankie signed a three year deal with him not so long back.... around the time he left Arnie, which is about... what? A year ago.

It's just not the right deal for either party - Allegedly by all accounts has to pay him too much - Frankie had to basically beg to be allowed to fight Lomax for less money a couple of years ago.... and Frankie can't get on often enough.

Witter basically told them to **** off at one point until they came back with a sensible offer - wanting something compared to what Frankie was getting as challenger.

Exactly - why should Hatton be left out in the cold?

He's a decent operator, ticks most boxes.... durable.... perfect fight to test Frankie's skills at a higher level.

But no. This Welborn might be a good fighter, I've no idea - but the very least that a challenger should have at welterweight, a stacked division, is a bit of form at, or just below, championship class.

I've said it many a time, and I'll say it again - I just don't think it's going to happen for Frankie in the pros. He's 27 now, he's done plenty of partying and still hasn't conquered the domestic scene yet, and is with the wrong management.

If he gets to world level I'd be amazed. Utterly amazed.

Would be great if he did though. Having met him a couple of times and had a bit of craic with him, he's a great lad who deserves all the success he gets.

 

Yeah, it has to make you wonder if Frank has any confidence in Frankie, he was constantly singing his praises and keeping Gavin busy 18 months ago, he's promoted him terribly so far.

Magic Matt is made for Frankie, very basic but tough as nails, baffling really.

 

If any of you havent seen it on the main page somewhere Frankie has said if the chance at the European crown came about he'd drop the lonsdale belt and go for it.

He'd do well to cut his ties with FW and move on and actually make something out of his career. At the moment, the Lomax fight was his best performance by a mile, and that was years ago.

Going the distance with an ex-pro footballer, having a stylistic nightmare fight with the likes of Witter, having zero KO power and a lot of personal stuff going on = A career that is more or less over.

He hasn't even had a defining fight/coming out fight or done anything amazing as a pro, and he was asking for MORE than Witter? Laughable. Probably feel back on the old "World Amateur" line! :good

 

Looking at this Welborn... he's fought absolutely nobody.

Aside from it being a bit of a local derby there's no reason for this fight.

He might as well give Woodhouse a rematch.

No, it's voluntary.

This just (IMO :yep) emphasises my point that every British title defence should be a mandatory, within the top 1 of the rankings.

If you want to be British champion, fight the best out there. Don't just fight the weakest acceptable opponents back to back, ''win'' it for keeps and then vacate. It's meaningless.

You've not won it outright, and I'm sure once you're old and retired you'd look at it and think ''I didn't really earn that''.

Wazza is just bull**** isn't he? Make the god dam ****ing fights that people WANT to see! Not this nonsense.

 

The only year Gavin was promoted well in was 2009. All the years since then haven't been as good as they should have been. He was fighting poor opposition for too long, but the number of fights every year dropped too. It's a joke and I think it harmed him inside the ring too. He's only fought 9 times in the last three ****ing years. It's bull****. Gavin should have been far more active than he has been, but against better opposition now.

A good step would have been Hatton or a move to European level. Instead, one of Gavin's three fights will be against poor opposition and I'd be surprised if he did step it up.

I don't blame Gavin for this at all. We all know who is at fault. Not enough fights and when the boxers are in the ring, it's against a fighter who is a level beneath what they should be facing.
