guess verdict is denton to win then so be good if this comes off as gavin will be going in as a underdog for once 1st time in years
Think Denton would overwhelm Frankie, Gavin doesn't punch hard enough to keep him off and is too negative. Vassell late stoppage.
Anyway, FWIW I'd have picked Gavin on points. (and would've expected the majority of Brits to have done the same, honestly) Funtime has far more talent. Sure, his varnish was marred by a few inconsistent performances for a stretch there but it's hardly as though Vassell has looked tidy every single time out. (remember the stinker against Ushona? Relied purely on physical strength and pressure to carry through...Frankie at his worst ought to outclass the Namibian thoroughly, whereas the lesser-faceted Denton could well struggle with those against whom he failed to shine...)
Because they assume Frankie won't be able to keep Vassell off of him. I've seen no actual analysis beyond this.
What bollocks. atsch B-grade pressure and middling power, yeah, that should completely unravel a supremely talented, well-schooled kid with a diverse toolkit who's lost only 21 of 136 combined am/pro matches. (beating some world class amateurs, losing to some absolute elites) It will be Frampton vs. Martinez all over, IMO. Except I don't even rate Denton as highly as over-the-hill Kiko...although, proportionately, I also don't rate Funtime up there with the Jackal either... So a poor man's Frampton vs. Martinez, then. :yep
Vassell can wallop and Gavin can be caught, interesting fight, if Gavin can box smart and stick to a game plan for 12 rounds then he can win but I think he may get caught late. Vassell to win in the 9th
What specific instance(s) in either man's career could be spurring everyone to make the leap of logic that Vassell has the firepower to not only hurt but finish Gavin? :?
I'm surprised by the 11 Vassell pts. To me, if it goes the distance Gavin wins, if it doesn't - Vassell wins!
Denton looked very good against Heffron and has beaten a number of good solid fighters (Purdy, Ushona, Colomban). Frankie struggled against Woodhouse who is nowhere near as good as Denton, Vassell is very powerful and Gavin is small at the weight. I just can't see him keeping him off for 12 rounds.
He did not struggle with Woodhouse. This is a recurring myth. Your analysis is based on something no one has managed with Gavin. By the end of most of his fights Gavin is usually putting it on his opponent, not the other way round.
Your overrating Gavin. Against Woodhouse he was getting outworked and pressured in some rounds. Frankie goes on the defensive for too long and has very average power. His AM career has no bearing on a 12 round title fight as we have seen so many times before with decorated am fighters.
I'd see Vassell losing a Purdy rematch, tbh. That was his best catch, and it's 3 years on and he's stagnating a bit...still on form but looking more or less the same as in 2010 with no evolution to his work. I don't rate the rest much higher than Gavin's comp. Fair enough, Vassell is a level above, but most view that as quite the off night for Gavin - and the experience should have educated him in dealing with a strong pressure fighter if nothing else. (ideal prep for DV, really) I'd be more apt to use the word "strong". He isn't a 1-punch devastator. Again fair statement...but that is still a thin basis for even a big strong natural WW stopping him just because he's a big strong natural WW. ...based on merely circumstantial supposition, it seems. Plenty of small but skilled boxers have bossed the waltz against Vassell types without sporting two left feet. Provided he's well up for it (there is the key - a poorly motivated Frankie does get physically & mentally squashed, I agree) I've seen nothing to suggest he can't do so in this case.
